Ye careful Angels whom eternal FateA
Ordains on Earth and human Acts to waitA
Who turn with secret Pow'r this restless BallB
And bid predestin'd Empires rise and fallB
Your sacred Aid religious Monarchs ownC
When first They merit then ascend the ThroneC
But Tyrants dread Ye lest your just DecreeD
Transfer the Pow'r and set the People freeD
See rescu'd Britain at your Altars bowE
And hear her Hymns your happy Care avowE
That still her Axes and her Rods supportF
The Judge's Frown and grace the awful CourtF
That Law with all her pompous Terror standsG
To wrest the Dagger from the Traitor's HandsG
And rigid Justice reads the fatal WordH
Poises the Ballance first then draws the SwordI
-
Britain Her Safety to your Guidance ownsJ
That She can sep'rate Parricides from SonsK
That impious Rage disarm'd She lives and ReignsL
Her Freedom kept by Him who broke Her ChainsL
-
And Thou great Minister above the restM
Of Guardian Spirits be Thou for ever blestM
Thou who of old wert sent to Israel's CourtF
With secret Aid great David's strong SupportF
To mock the frantick Rage of cruel SaulB
And strike the useless Jav'lin to the WallB
Thy later Care o'er William's Temples heldN
On Boyn's propitious Banks the heav'nly ShieldO
When Pow'r Divine did Sov'reign Right declareP
And Cannons mark'd Whom They were bid to spareP
-
Still blessed Angel be thy Care the sameQ
Be William's Life untouch'd as is his FameQ
Let Him own Thine as Britain owns His HandR
Save Thou the King as He has sav'd the LandR
-
We Angels Forms in pious Monarchs viewS
We reverence William for He acts like YouS
Like You Commission'd to chastize and blessT
He must avenge the World and give it PeaceU
-
Indulgent Fate our potent Pray'r receivesV
And still Britannia smiles and William livesW
The Hero dear to Earth by Heav'n belov'dX
By Troubles must be vex'd by Dangers prov'dY
His Foes must aid to make his Fame compleatY
And fix his Throne secure on their DefeatY
-
So tho' with sudden Rage the Tempest comesZ
Tho' the Winds roar and tho' the Water foamsA2
Imperial Britain on the Sea looks downB2
And smiling sees her Rebel Subject frownB2
Striking her Cliff the Storm confirms her Pow'rC2
The Waves but whiten her Triumphant ShoreD2
In vain They wou'd advance in vain retreatY
Broken They dash and perish at her FeetY
-
For William still new Wonders shall be shownC
The Pow'rs that rescu'd shall preserve the ThroneC
Safe on his Darling Britain's joyful SeaD
Behold the Monarch plows his liquid WayE2
His Fleets in Thunder thro' the World declareP
Whose Empire they obey whose Arms they bearP
Bless'd by aspiring Winds He finds the StrandY
Blacken'd with Crowds He sees the Nations standY
Blessing his Safety proud of his CommandY
In various Tongues He hears the Captains dwellF2
On their great Leader's Praise by Turns They tellF2
And listen each with emulous Glory fir'dY
How William conquer'd and how France retir'dY
How Belgia freed the Hero's Arm confess'dY
But trembl'd for the Courage which She blestY
-
O Louis from this great Example knowG2
To be at once a Hero and a FoeG2
By sounding Trumpets Hear and ratl'ing DrumsZ
When William to the open Vengeance comesZ
And See the Soldier plead the Monarch's RightY
Heading His Troops and Foremost in the FightY
-
Hence then close Ambush and perfidious WarD2
Down to your Native Seats of Night repairP
And Thou Bellona weep thy cruel PrideY
Restrain'd behind the Victor's Chariot ty'dY
In brazen Knots and everlasting ChainsL
So Europe's Peace so William's Fate ordainsL
While on the Iv'ry Chair in happy StateY
He sits Secure in Innocence and GreatY
In regal Clemency and views beneathH2
Averted Darts of Rage and pointless Arms of DeathI2
