In sullen Humour one Day JoveA
Sent Hermes down to Ida's GroveA
Commanding Cupid to deliverB
His Store of Darts his total QuiverB
That Hermes shou'd the Weapons breakC
Or throw 'em into Lethe's LakeC
-
Hermes You know must do his ErrandD
He found his Man produc'd his WarrantE
Cupid your Darts this very HourB
There's no contending against PowerB
-
How sullen Jupiter just nowF
I think I said and You'll allowF
That Cupid was as bad as HeG
Hear but the Youngster's ReparteeG
-
Come Kinsman said the little GodH
Put off your Wings lay by your RodH
Retire with Me to yonder BowerB
And rest your self for half an HourB
'Tis far indeed from hence to Heav'nF
And You fly fast and 'tis but SevenF
We'll take one cooling Cup of NectarB
And drink to this Celestial HectorB
-
He break my Darts or hurt my Pow'rI
He Leda's Swan and Danae's Show'rI
Go bid him his Wife's Tongue restrainF
And mind his Thunder and his RainF
-
My Darts O certainly I'll give 'emJ
From Cloe's Eyes He shall receive 'emJ
There's One the Best in all my QuiverB
Twang thro' his very Heart and LiverB
He then shall Pine and Sigh and RaveA
Good Lord what Bustle shall We haveA
Neptune must straight be sent to SeaG
And Flora summon'd twice a dayK
-
One must find Shells and t'other Flow'rsG
For cooling Grotts and fragrant Bow'rsG
That Cloe may be serv'd in StateL
The Hours must at Her Toilet waitL
Whilst all the reasoning Fools belowM
Wonder their Watches go too slowM
Lybs must fly South and Eurus EastN
For Jewels for Her Hair and BreastO
No Matter tho' their cruel HasteP
Sink Cities and lay Forrests wasteP
No Matter tho' This Fleet be lostQ
Or That lie wind bound on the CoastR
What whis'pring in my Mother's EarS
What Care that Juno shou'd not hearS
What Work among You Scholar GodsG
Phoebus must write Him am'rous OdesG
And Thou poor Cousin must composeG
His Letters in submissive ProseG
Whilst haughty Cloe to sustainF
The Honour of My mystic ReignF
Shall all his Gifts and Vows disdainF
And laugh at your Old Bully's PainF
Dear Couz said Hermes in a FrightT
For Heav'n sake keep Your Darts Good NightT
