In Heav'n one Holy day You readA
In wise Anacreon GanymedeB
Drew heedless Cupid in to throwC
A Main to pass an Hour or soC
The little Trojan by the wayD
By Hermes taught play'd All the PlayD
-
The God unhappily engag'dE
By Nature rash by Play enrag'dE
Complain'd and sigh'd and cry'd and frettedF
Lost ev'ry earthly thing He bettedF
In ready Mony all the StoreG
Pick'd up long since from Danae's Show'rH
A Snush Box set with bleeding HeartsI
Rubies all pierc'd with Diamond DartsI
His Nine pins made of Myrtle WoodF
The Tree in Ida's Forest stoodF
His Bowl pure Gold the very sameJ
Which Paris gave the Cyprian DameJ
Two Table Books in Shagreen CoversK
Fill'd with good Verse from real LoversK
Merchandise rare A Billet douxK
It's Matter passionate yet trueL
Heaps of Hair Rings and cypher'd SealsK
Rich Trifles serious BagatellesK
-
What sad Disorders Play begetsK
Desp'rate and mad at length He setsK
Those Darts whose Points make Gods adoreG
His Might and deprecate his Pow'rH
Those Darts whence all our Joy and PainM
Arise those Darts come Seven's the MainM
Cries Ganymede The usual TrickN
Seven slur a Six Eleven A NickN
-
Ill News goes fast 'Twas quickly knownO
That simple Cupid was undoneP
Swifter than Lightning Venus flewL
Too late She found the thing too trueL
Guess how the Goddess greets her SonP
Come hither Sirrah no begonP
And hark Ye is it so indeedF
A Comrade You for GanymedeF
An Imp as wicked for his AgeQ
As any earthly Lady's PageQ
A Scandal and a Scourge to TroyR
A Prince's Son A Black guard BoyR
A Sharper that with Box and DiceK
Draws in young Deities to ViceK
All Heav'n is by the Ears togetherS
Since first That little Rogue came hitherS
Juno her self has had no PeaceK
And truly I've been favour'd lessK
For Jove as Fame reports but FameJ
Says things not fit for Me to nameJ
Has acted ill for such a GodF
And taken Ways extreamly oddF
-
And Thou unhappy Child She saidF
Her Anger by her Grief allay'dF
Unhappy Child who thus hast lostF
All the Estate We e'er could boastF
Whither O whither wilt Thou runP
Thy Name despis'd thy Weakness knownP
Nor shall thy Shrine on Earth be crown'dF
Nor shall thy Pow'r in Heav'n be own'dF
When Thou nor Man nor God can'st woundF
-
Obedient Cupid kneeling cry'dF
Cease dearest Mother cease to chideF
Gany's a Cheat and I'm a BubbleT
Yet why this great Excess of TroubleT
The Dice were false the Darts are goneP
Yet how are You or I undoneP
-
The Loss of These I can supplyU
With keener Shafts from Cloe's EyeU
Fear not We e'er can be disgrac'dF
While That bright Magazine shall lastF
Your crowded Altars still shall smokeV
And Man your Friendly Aid invokeV
Jove shall again revere your Pow'rH
And rise a Swan or fall a Show'rH
