RecitA
Beneath a verdant laurel's ample shadeA
His lyre to mournful numbers strungB
Horace immortal bard supinely laidA
To Venus thus address'd the songC
Ten thousand little loves aroundA
Listening dwelt on every soundA
-
ArietA
Potent Venus bid thy sonD
Sound no more his dire alarmsE
Youth on silent wings is flownF
Graver years come rolling onG
Spare my age unfit for armsE
Safe and humble let me restA
From all amorous care releasedA
Potent Venus bid thy sonD
Sound no more his dire alarmsE
-
RecitA
Yet Venus why do I each morn prepareH
The fragrant wreath for Cloe's hairH
Why why do I all day lament and sighI
Unless the beauteous maid be nighI
And why all night pursue her in my dreamsJ
Through flowery meads and crystal streamsJ
-
RecitA
Thus sung the bard and thus the goddess spokeK
Submissive bow to Love's imperious yokeK
Every state and every ageL
Shall own my rule and fear my rageL
Compell'd by me thy Muse shall proveM
That all the world was born to loveN
-
ArietA
Bid thy destined lyre discoverO
Soft desire and gentle painP
Often praise and always love herO
Through her ear her heart obtainP
Verse shall please and sight shall move herO
Cupid does with Phoebus reignP
