Dear Howard from the soft assaults of loveA
Poets and painters never are secureB
Can I untouch'd the fair one's passions moveC
Or thou draw beauty and not feel its powerD
-
To great Appelles when young Ammon broughtE
The darling idol of his captive heartF
And the pleased nymph with kind attention satG
To have her charms recorded by his artF
-
The amorous master own'd her potent eyesH
Sigh'd when he look'd and trembled as he drewI
Each flowing line confirm'd his first surpriseH
And as the piece advanced the passion grewI
-
While Philip's son while Venus' son was nearJ
What different tortures does his bosom feelK
Great was the rival and the god severeJ
Nor could he hide his flame nor durst revealK
-
The prince renown'd in bounty as in armsL
With pity saw the ill conceal'd distressM
Quitted his title to Campaspe's charmsL
And gave the fair one to the friend's embraceN
-
Thus the more beauteous Cloe sat to theeO
Good Howard emulous of the Grecian artF
But happy thou from Cupid's arrow freeO
And flames that pierced thy predecessor's heartF
-
Had thy poor breast received an equal painP
Had I been vested with the monarch's powerD
Thou must have sigh'd unlucky youth in vainP
Nor from my bounty hadst thou found a cureB
-
Though to convince thee that the friend did feelK
A kind concern for thy ill fated careQ
I would have sooth'd thy flame I could not healK
Given thee the world though I withheld the fairQ
