Ye storm winds of AutumnA
Who rush by who shakeB
The window and ruffleC
The gleam lighted lakeB
Who cross to the hill sideD
Thin sprinkled with farmsE
Where the high woods strip sadlyF
Their yellowing armsE
Ye are bound for the mountainsG
Ah with you let me goH
Where your cold distant barrierI
The vast range of snowH
Through the loose clouds lifts dimlyF
Its white peaks in airJ
How deep is their stillnessK
Ah would I were thereJ
-
But on the stairs what voice is this I hearL
Buoyant as morning and as morning clearM
Say has some wet bird haunted English lawnN
Lent it the music of its trees at dawnN
Or was it from some sun fleck'd mountain brookO
That the sweet voice its upland clearness tookO
Ah it comes nearerI
Sweet notes this wayP
-
Hark fast by the windowH
The rushing winds goH
To the ice cumber'd gorgesQ
The vast seas of snowH
There the torrents drive upwardR
Their rock strangled humA
There the avalanche thundersS
The hoarse torrent dumbA
I come O ye mountainsG
Ye torrents I comeA
-
But who is this by the half open'd doorT
Whose figure casts a shadow on the floorT
The sweet blue eyes the soft ash colour'd hairJ
The cheeks that still their gentle paleness wearJ
The lovely lips with their arch smile that tellsU
The unconquer'd joy in which her spirit dwellsU
Ah they bend nearerI
Sweet lips this wayP
-
Hark the wind rushes past usK
Ah with that let me goH
To the clear waning hill sideD
Unspotted by snowH
There to watch o'er the sunk valeV
The frore mountain wallW
Where the nich'd snow bed sprays downX
Its powdery fallW
There its dusky blue clustersS
The aconite spreadsY
There the pines slope the cloud stripsZ
Hung soft in their headsY
No life but at momentsA2
The mountain bee's humA
I come O ye mountainsG
Ye pine woods I comeA
-
Forgive me forgive meF
Ah Marguerite fainB2
Would these arms reach to clasp theeF
But see 'tis in vainB2
-
In the void air towards theeF
My strain'd arms are castC2
But a sea rolls between usK
Our different pastC2
-
To the lips ah of othersS
Those lips have been prestD2
And others ere I wasE2
Were clasp'd to that breastD2
-
Far far from each otherI
Our spirits have grownF2
And what heart knows anotherI
Ah who knows his ownF2
-
Blow ye winds lift me with youG2
I come to the wildH2
Fold closely O NatureI
Thine arms round thy childH2
-
To thee only God grantedI2
A heart ever newG2
To all always openJ2
To all always trueG2
-
Ah calm me restore meF
And dry up my tearsK2
On thy high mountain platformsL2
Where Morn first appearsM2
-
Where the white mists for everI
Are spread and upfurl'dI2
In the stir of the forcesN2
Whence issued the worldI2
