Isolation: To Marguerite Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDEFF EGEGHI JEJEKK ELEMDD ANANHI EEEEOP

We were apart yet day by dayA
I bade my heart more constant beB
I bade it keep the world awayA
And grow a home for only theeB
Nor fear'd but thy love likewise grewC
Like mine each day more tried more trueC
-
The fault was grave I might have knownD
What far too soon alas I learn'dE
The heart can bind itself aloneD
And faith may oft be unreturn'dE
Self sway'd our feelings ebb and swellF
Thou lov'st no more Farewell FarewellF
-
Farewell and thou thou lonely heartE
Which never yet without remorseG
Even for a moment didst departE
From thy remote and spher egrave d courseG
To haunt the place where passions reignH
Back to thy solitude againI
-
Back with the conscious thrill of shameJ
Which Luna felt that summer nightE
Flash through her pure immortal frameJ
When she forsook the starry heightE
To hang over Endymion's sleepK
Upon the pine grown Latmian steepK
-
Yet she chaste queen had never provedE
How vain a thing is mortal loveL
Wandering in Heaven far removedE
But thou hast long had place to proveM
This truth to prove and make thine ownD
Thou hast been shalt be art aloneD
-
Or if not quite alone yet theyA
Which touch thee are unmating thingsN
Ocean and clouds and night and dayA
Lorn autumns and triumphant springsN
And life and others' joy and painH
And love if love of happier menI
-
Of happier men for they at leastE
Have dream'd two human hearts might blendE
In one and were through faith releasedE
From isolation without endE
Prolong'd nor knew although not lessO
Alone than thou their lonelinessP
