Written In London, On The 19th Of March, 1796 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE GHIH FJKJ LMKM HNOP KKQK RKSTUV

A lov'd companion chosen friendA
Does at this hour departB
Whom the dear name of father bindsC
Still closer to my heartB
-
On him may joy dispensing heav'nD
Each calm delight bestowE
And eas'd of peace destroying careF
His life serenely flowE
-
Did I but know his bosom calmG
And free from anxious fearH
Around me in more cheerful huesI
Would every scene appearH
-
And I will hope that he who ne'erF
Repin'd at heav'n's decreeJ
But ever patient and resign'dK
Submissive bent the kneeJ
-
Who best of fathers never soughtL
For arbitrary swayM
But free within each youthful mindK
Bade Reason lead the wayM
-
Who taught us 'stead of servile fearH
A warm esteem to proveN
And bade each act of duty springO
From gratitude and loveP
-
Yes I must hope that generous mindK
With many cares opprestK
Shall in the winter of his daysQ
With sweet repose be blestK
-
-
-
-
A friend a year or two ago gave me Joseph's Reconciliation withR
his Brethren as a subject to write upon but I was afraid of notK
treating it in such a manner as a sacred story deserved and gave upS
the attempt when I had written little more than the following linesT
to account for their not knowing him although he well remembered themU
and am persuaded to let them appear hereV
