On reading in Savary's Travels the death of Ali Bey whoA
it is there represented in the midst of enlightened andB
benevolent efforts to benefit his country was repeatedlyC
betrayed and at length taken captive by his brother in lawD
whom he had advanced and loved and who till the very lastE
he could not believe to be his enemyC
-
-
O generous Ali while thy fate inspiresF
Indignant pity with a patriot's firesG
I mourn for Egypt and with equal zealH
For her for thee and ruin'd science feelH
Admire the confidence my heart deploresI
And blame the weakness it almost adoresI
-
Pride of thy race before my mental eyesJ
I see thee like another Alfred riseJ
See honour splendent on thy ample browK
While Thought and Genius fill the orbs belowL
Those beaming orbs where lofty sweetness shoneM
And where the soul sate smiling on her throneM
Depriv'd too soon of that benignant rayN
Which impious Dahab shudder'd to surveyN
Pale bleeding conquer'd dying and forlornO
I see thee view the wretch with silent scornO
See thy cheek flush at the false tears he shedP
And proudly turn away the languid headP
With mingled anger sorrow and disdainQ
That he should dare to tempt thy love againR
-
Oh yet within the tent I see thee lieS
The victor like a coward crouching byS
O'erawed rebuked and humbled in the hourT
The plenitude of his success and powerT
A pain the guilty never make us knowL
In all the miseries they cause belowL
A pain which they in every triumph feelH
A humbling sense no glory yet could healH
The want of conscious worth the poignant thoughtU
That inwardly sets all pretence at naughtU
That curbs all self applause tears all disguiseJ
When the subdued the ruin'd can despiseJ
And in the arms of death can yet be freeC
To say Let me be any thing but theeC
-
Ambition while thy zeal the good inflameV
And make a noble nature sigh for fameV
We deem thee of a more than royal lineW
For self devotion tendeth to divineW
But when like Dahab's demon selfish vainQ
It loosens Gratitude's mysterious chainQ
When broken Faith aloud but vainly callsX
When the warm friend the king the brother fallsX
Instead of honours and a conqueror's fameV
Hatred shall haunt and curses brand thy nameV
