Vignettes 08: The Spanish Lady's Farewell Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEDE FAGA HIJI IKDK

Manuel I do not shed a tearA
Our parting to delayB
I dare not listen to my fearC
I dare not bid thee stayB
-
The heart may shrink the spirit failD
But Spaniards must be freeE
And pride and duty shall prevailD
O'er all my love for theeE
-
Then go and round that gallant headF
Like banners in the airA
Shall float full many a daring hopeG
And many a tender prayerA
-
Should freedom perish at thy deathH
'T'were folly to repineI
And I should every feeling loseJ
Except the wish for mineI
-
But if the destiny of SpainI
Be once again to riseK
Oh grant me heaven to read the taleD
In Manuel's joyful eyesK
