Vignettes 05: Valentine From A Young Lady To Her Mother Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABC DEFE GHGH IBIB JKLK MGMG NINI

It is a custom in some parts of Norfolk and SuffolkA
to send little presents with verses on Valentine's DayB
to relatives and friendsC
-
-
Hope has her emblem so has LoveD
But I have vainly soughtE
For one that might entirely proveF
The picture of my thoughtE
-
If violets when fresh with dewG
Could amaranthine beH
Their soothing deep and glowing hueG
Would justly speak for meH
-
Or to some plant with tendrils fineI
With blossoms sweet and gayB
This office I would now assignI
But flowers will all decayB
-
A bird would suit my purpose moreJ
With filial heart enduedK
But ere their little life is o'erL
Birds lose their gratitudeK
-
No emblem of the love I feelM
Appears within my viewG
Less ardent or less pure the zealM
Less tender or less trueG
-
All I can do is to avowN
My services are thineI
And that my spirit still shall bowN
Before my ValentineI
