Come Edmund now the sun goes downA
Thy many wanderings tellB
Say after all thine eyes have seenC
If home appears so wellB
-
So well alas ye do not knowD
How absence can endearE
In every hill in every treeF
A thousand charms appearG
-
The verdure of these English fieldsH
Seems in my heart to glowD
There as this shaded river windsI
I feel its waters flowD
-
For though I ventured forth so boldJ
So long so far did roamK
Affection like a wayward childL
Still wept and murmur'd homeK
-
I persevered yet still I strainedM
The pleader to my breastN
I hush'd her cries but as I chidN
More fondly still carestN
-
And when I met with foreign damesO
Of grace and beauty rareP
I fancied one dear village girlQ
Like them but oh how fairP
-
My early playmate oft I humm'dN
The lays she lisping sungR
And sigh'd when looking on the armS
Where she at parting hungR
-
Then joy within my native valeT
To find my Ellen freeF
To fancy others pleas'd her notN
Because she thought on meF
-
So closely round a glowing heartN
Did never flowers entwineU
Oh ne'er was mortal spirit lull'dN
With visions sweet as mineU
