| A little book I'd only ask | A |
| And fill it full of wings | B |

| While others bent their mournful way | C |
| Through cold and cloudy skies | D |

| And here I would the light'ning bring | E |
| With threatening forked glare | F |
| And there the hallowed rainbow fling | E |
| Across the troubled air | F |

| Some faint and wearily should glide | G |
| Their broken flight along | H |
| While some high in the air should ride | G |
| Dilated bold and strong | H |

| Some agitated and adrift | I |
| Against their will should rove | J |
| Some steering forward sure and swift | I |
| Should scarcely seem to move | K |

| While others happiest of their kind | L |
| Should in the ether soar | M |
| As if no care would ever find | L |
| No sorrow reach them more | M |

| When soon an arrow from below | N |
| Should wound them in their flight | O |
| And many a crimson drop should flow | N |
