Fair village nymph ah may I meetA
Thy pleasing form where'er I strayB
With open air and converse sweetA
Still cheer my undiscover'd wayB
-
With eyes that shew the placid mindC
And with no feign'd emotions rollD
With mien that sprightly or resign'dC
Bespeaks the temper of the soulD
-
With smiles where not the lips aloneE
Receive a brighter vermil hueF
The cheek does warmer roses ownE
And the eyes beam a deeper blueF
-
Though Fashion's minions scorn thy pow'rG
And slight thee 'cause in russet drestC
Yet Joy frequents thy peaceful bow'rG
And sorrow flies to thee for restC
-
The echoing laugh the rapturous tearH
The smile of friendship gay and freeI
Delight but when they are sincereJ
And given lovely nymph by theeI
-
When my Rosina reads a taleK
Though sweet the tuneful accents flowL
No studied pathos does prevailK
To bid the hearer's bosom glowL
-
Her voice to sympathy resign'dC
Each different feeling can impartC
And tell me not we e'er can findC
A modulator like the heartC
-
And Mary's locks of glossy brownM
That fall in waves with graceful swellN
In ever varying ringlets thrownE
The fairest curls of art excelN
-
Still rob'd in innocence and easeO
Daughter of Truth shall thou prevailK
When Affectation cannot pleaseO
And all the spells of Fashion failK
-
