Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GAGA HIHI JHJH KLML NONO PQPQ R

Thou Margaret lov'st the secret shadeA
The murmuring brook or tow'ring treeB
The village cot within the gladeA
And lonely walk have charms for theeB
-
To thee more dear the jasmine bow'rC
That shelt'ring undisturb'd retreatD
Than the high canopy of pow'rC
Or Luxury's embroider'd seatD
-
More sweet the early morning breezeE
Whose odours fill the rural valeF
The waving bosom of the seasE
When ruffled by the rising galeF
-
Than all which pride or pomp bestowG
To grace the lofty Indian maidA
Who prizes more the diamond's glowG
Than all in humbler vest array'dA
-
Sweet is the rural festive songH
Which sounds so wildly o'er the plainI
When thoughtless mirth the notes prolongH
And heart felt pleasure pours the strainI
-
Sweet is the dance where light and gayJ
The village maiden trips alongH
Her simple robe in careless playJ
As her fleet step winds round the throngH
-
Sweet is the labourer's blazing fireK
When evening shades invite to restL
Though weary home does joy inspireM
And social love dilates his breastL
-
His rural lass with glee preparesN
The dainties fondness made her hoardO
Her husband now the banquet sharesN
And children croud around the boardO
-
Ah who could wish to view the airP
Of listless ease and languid wealthQ
Who with such pleasures could compareP
The joys of innocence and healthQ
