Before the fair Aurora spreadA
Her azure mantle o'er the skiesB
While sleep its pleasing influence shedA
On grateful mortals weary eyesB
-
Emerg'd from a surrounding woodC
On a bleak mountain's sullen browD
A solitary outlaw stoodC
And view'd through mist the world belowE
-
With deep regret his bosom fraughtF
His arms were wreath'd in sorrow's knotG
Nor seem'd he yet by patience taughtF
To bear submissively his lotG
-
Hidden was each enlivening graceH
Deprest by his untimely doomI
A hectic flush o'erspread his faceH
Instead of nature's florid bloomI
-
Untutor'd in the school of griefJ
His pining spirit spoke in sighsB
Though almost hopeless of reliefJ
He look'd around with eager eyesB
-
And fondly bent an anxious earK
To the slow murmuring of the breezeL
Essaying oft in vain to hearK
A friendly step beneath the treesL
-
Delusive wish at last he criedM
Why wilt thou fill my aching breastN
And thus my miseries derideM
By telling how I might be blestN
-
No kind consolers hither bendO
By sympathy to ease my careP
Here comes no ever faithful friendO
Who yet might shield me from despairP
-
The abbey's well known tow'r I seekQ
It fades from my impassion'd eyeR
The fancied outlines softly breakS
And melt into the distant skyR
-
No pitying object now remainsT
That I may know those scenes are nearU
Where generous love and friendship reignsT
And Alwin's name may claim a tearP
-
And you my lov'd paternal grovesV
Where I no more must shew my headA
In your fair walks a stranger rovesV
And treacherous Normans daily treadA
-
E'en now their presence may prophaneW
The halls where Herbert did resideM
E'en now may joy and gladness reignW
And Adelaide be Percy's brideM
-
Yet no her soul the seat of truthX
Would ne'er a second love receiveY
The sacred vows of artless youthX
Her Alwin ever shall believeY
-
They still shall comfort my sad heartZ
And sooth the anguish of my mindA2
Shall still a cheering hope impartZ
And make me somewhat more resign'dA2
-
Ah yet I hear her trembling handB2
Withdraw the bolt to set me freeC2
Yet hear the hasty kind commandB2
My Alwin fly and live for meC2
-
No other can obtain my loveD2
I would for thee the world resignW
Then let thy prompt obedience proveE2
That thou art truly wholly mineW
-
And ever to her promise trueF2
No pleasure shall her soul elateG2
For yet her constant thoughts pursueF2
A wretched Outlaw's hapless fateG2
-
In vain proud Ranulph shall upbraidH2
My Adelaide is still the sameI2
And for thy sake dear lovely maidH2
I will not curse the Norman nameI2
-
Not though my father's large domainsV
Are plunder'd by the murderous bandsV
And my Northumbria's fertile plainsV
Lie wasted by their cruel handsV
-
Though as a son I mourn the fateG2
Of those to whom my life I oweE
And hate the hearts that thus createG2
The dimness of severest woeE
-
Though I behold no friendly steelJ2
To give my Emma vengeance drawnW
And though a brother's pangs I feelJ2
To know her destitute forlornW
-
Though banish'd from the sight of dayK2
In dreary solitude I pineW
And forc'd to feel a tyrant's swayK2
Each dear paternal right resignW
-
Yet will I seal my lips nor dareP
To extricate my haughty foesV
The hateful guilty root I spareP
Which can produce so fair a roseV
-
But thou my heart wilt thou be calmL2
Oh tell me can reflection ceaseV
And this fond bosom now so warmM2
Be ever tranquilliz'd to peaceV
-
Ah no a father's scornful eyeR
Is ever present to my viewF2
And tells me Herbert dar'd to dieR
Though Normans could his son subdueF2
-
Each feeble plea his soul disdainsV
They cannot for the fault atoneW
Though when I left Northumbria's plainsV
I had not fifteen summers knownW
-
And hear me Herbert when I swearP
It was not fear that urg'd my flightN2
A worthless life was not my careP
I thought but of a parent's rightN2
-
Then pardon that my youth comply'dN2
To ease a mother's anxious fearsV
That when I rather would have diedN2
I yielded to a sister's tearsV
-
Alas a peasant's humble shedN2
Soon saw our sainted parents' deathO2
Who while our hearts in anguish bledN2
With pious hopes resign'd her breathO2
-
When mists foretel the ev'ning nearU
And clouds of chilling dew ariseV
We sought the grave of her so dearU
And offer'd there our tears and sighsV
-
'Till mild reflection lent her aidN2
And bade our filial sorrows ceaseV
The fever of our souls allay'dN2
We sunk into a mournful peaceV
-
My pensive bosom strove to keepP2
A dying mother's last requestN2
I let the thoughts of vengeance sleepP2
And studied to make Emma blestN2
-
No longer shunning of the dawnW
Or seeking the sequester'd shadeN2
I call'd my sister to the lawnW
And trod with her the flow'ry gladeN2
-
Submitting to our wayward fateN2
I talk'd not of the treasures flownW
But still seem'd easy and sedateN2
While pressing verdure not my ownW
-
Then all I wish'd and all I fear'dN2
Was by fraternal love inspir'dN2
And one by every tie endear'dN2
The only friend my soul desir'dN2
-
Yet soon that pleasing calmness fledN2
A Norman beauty won my heartN2
Imperious love my footsteps ledN2
And bade all secrecy departN2
-
I own'd the splendour of my raceV
Altho' a peasant's form I boreQ2
I fancied silence was disgraceV
And hid my sentiments no moreQ2
-
Her father's tongue my fate decreedN2
And doom'd great Herbert's son to shameI2
For tho' by love from prison freedN2
I bear an outlaw's hateful nameI2
-
My sister no fond friend can shieldN2
No relative allay her griefJ
For tyranny all hearts hath steel'dN2
And nought can give her soul reliefJ
-
With ev'ry quality to charmR2
A guardian will not heaven allowD
To screen thy artless youth from harmR2
And fair deserted help thee nowD
-
No aid no comfort can be nighR
And shall thy brother here remainW
Has he not fortitude to flyR
And burst the heavy servile chainW
-
Why should I linger here aloneW
Unseen by every human eyeR
To live unfriended and unknownW
And in this dreary desart dieR
-
For now the sun beams gild the skyR
And give the misty morning graceV
Far from the light I'm doom'd to flyR
Abandon'd by the human raceV
-
But no I'll bear suspense no moreQ2
Too dear a price to purchase breathO2
I'll seek the scenes I yet deploreQ2
And meet a welcome wish'd for deathO2
-
Tortur'd to frenzy Alwin flewF2
And as he left his sad retreatN2
He turning look'd a last adieuF2
And shook the dew drops from his feetN2
-
His hurried steps nor press'd the groundN2
Nor pointed out the path he cameI2
And though so long the way he foundN2
Despair buoy'd up his fainting frameI2
-
The sun shot forth a feeble rayK2
But hid his glorious orb from sightN2
And the pale evening's modest greyK2
Had soften'd the too glaring lightN2
-
When Alwin reach'd the humble cotN2
That once he did with Emma shareP
And weeping hail'd the well known spotN2
In vain for Emma was not thereP
-
Repuls'd he turn'd his languid eyeR
Where Ranulph's lofty turrets roseV
And heaving disappointment's sighR
He sought the mansion of his foesV
-
His faltering step when there he cameI2
A proud disdainful air possestN2
Memory recall'd his former shameI2
And indignation fill'd his breastN2
-
He enter'd in his wild attireS2
With hasty pace and haggard browD
Scorn fill'd his azure eye with fireS2
And gave his cheeks a deeper glowE
-
A graceful knight who met his viewF2
Sat pleading by a lady's sideN2
And Alwin's jealous bosom knewF2
Lord Percy and his fated brideN2
-
Mistaken youth thy eyes have seenW
The persons pictur'd in thy mindN2
But who is that with pensive mienW
And forehead on her hand reclin'dN2
-
O'er whom Lord Ranulph fondly bendsV
With sorrow seated on his browD
While the regretting tear descendsV
O'er his pale cheek in silent woeE
-
Ah is it thus sad Alwin saidN2
The fancied bride the accents knewF2
Lord Percy rais'd his drooping headN2
And lovely Emma met his viewF2
-
Then rapture and surprize prevail'dN2
Each bosom felt confus'd delightN2
While his return the mourner hail'dN2
And thus his sorrows did requiteN2
-
O dearest Alwin now no moreQ2
My father disapproves our flameI2
No longer we thy loss deploreQ2
Or tremble to pronounce thy nameI2
-
A noble friend has gain'd our causeV
And vanquish'd all his former hateN2
Who ere he own'd a lover's lawsV
With generous tears had wept thy fateN2
-
Yes injur'd youth Lord Ranulph criedN2
Thou art this day my chosen heirP
In Adelaide behold thy brideN2
Thy sister's future husband thereP
-
Lord Percy to a candid mindN2
Unites a fervour like thy ownW
And Emma not to merit blindN2
Refers his cause to thee aloneW
-
If thou wilt grant his fond desireS2
'Twill gain a brave a noble friendN2
And the possessions of thy sireS2
To his posterity descendN2
-
And did my Emma stay to hearK
Her brother sanctify her choiceV
Ah Percy now you need not fearU
From Alwin a dissenting voiceV
-
Blest in my love in Emma blestN2
My heart each cherish'd wish obtainsV
Northumbrians now no more opprestN2
Shall own a son of Herbert reignsV
-
May ye rebuild the peasant's cotN2
Exalt the woe depressed headN2
And o'er each desolated spotN2
The fostering calm of quiet spreadN2
-
May sterne reserve and caution ceaseV
With lenient hand dispense your swayK2
Give them the healing balm of peaceV
Their wounded spirits will obeyK2
-
Ah cheer their gloom dispel their careP
The smile will soon replace the tearP
And wedded to a Saxon fairP
The foreign lord no more appearU
