To A R CA
-
-
As musing late I sat reclin'dB
And waking dreams absorb'd my mindB
A damsel came of various dyesC
Like painted Iris from the skiesC
A purfled saffron was her vestD
And sweet gum cistus form'd her crestD
In many a playful ring her hairE
Flew light and flossy in the airE
The mantle blue and gold she woreF
A rose of opals held beforeF
While graceful in her fairy handG
Appear'd a crimson tufted wandH
Whose shade on every object threwI
A glowing tint of roseate hueI
-
Whence art thou blooming nymph I criedJ
And thus a tuneful voice repliedJ
Men call me Fancy at my shrineK
Myriads confess my power divineK
There painters bend the willing kneeA
And laurell'd poets sue to meA
For mine is every vivid rayL
Which partial Nature gave the dayL
And to the music of my songM
A thousand nameless charms belongM
-
The friend of Happiness I dwellN
Belov'd alike in court or cellN
Where Glory lifts her ardent eyeO
With hasty kindred zeal I flyO
In sun beams place the hero's formP
And bid his arm command the stormP
On swelling clouds an altar raiseQ
And fan the tow'ring flame of praiseQ
-
Oft from the lorn enthusiast's lyreR
My fingers strike etherial fireS
And give to sounds of piercing woeT
Extatic rapture's fervent glowT
Oft sooth the maniac's throbbing veinU
And grace her simple wilder'd strainU
The tribe of Pain in fetters keepV
Lull wounded Memory to sleepV
And in the mind of gloomy CareE
Bid Thought an angel's semblance wearE
-
Dear to each blest aerial pow'rW
E'en Wisdom calls me to her bow'rW
My songs her leisure hours beguileX
And teach her holy lip to smileX
And when the Muse with thoughtful careE
Has woven chaplets for her hairE
I let her with her myrtles twineK
Full many a fragrant rose of mineK
-
Then why since all the wise and gayL
To me a grateful homage payL
Since I to all my hand extendY
And liberal every heart befriendY
Does Nancy from the croud retireR
And rend my blossoms from her lyreR
Though every string the loss bewailX
And tones of mellow sweetness failX
Which us'd to charm the pensive earZ
When list'ning Friendship bent to hearZ
-
Tell her I wish not to intrudeA2
Upon her sacred solitudeA2
Nor cast my undulating chainU
Around her glowing heart againB2
No every claim I now resignK
Yet let some small regard be mineK
Let one who nurs'd her infant yearsC2
And wip'd away some bitter tearsD2
Still animate the scenes aroundE2
And make her tread on fairy groundE2
Give playful sweetness to each layX
And decorate the passing dayX
-
Tell her if now she scorns my strainU
She may invoke my name in vainU
In vain my proffered aid imploreF
Contemn'd I hardly pardon moreF
-
She said and springing from the earthF2
Attending found her suitor MirthF2
Who caught her hand with lively airE
And plac'd her in his silver chairE
Which through the yielding ether flewX
And quickly bore them from my viewX
