As musing late I sat reclin'd | B |
And waking dreams absorb'd my mind | B |
A damsel came of various dyes | C |
Like painted Iris from the skies | C |
A purfled saffron was her vest | D |
And sweet gum cistus form'd her crest | D |
In many a playful ring her hair | E |
Flew light and flossy in the air | E |
The mantle blue and gold she wore | F |
A rose of opals held before | F |
While graceful in her fairy hand | G |
Appear'd a crimson tufted wand | H |
Whose shade on every object threw | I |
A glowing tint of roseate hue | I |
- | |
Whence art thou blooming nymph I cried | J |
And thus a tuneful voice replied | J |
Men call me Fancy at my shrine | K |
Myriads confess my power divine | K |
There painters bend the willing knee | A |
And laurell'd poets sue to me | A |
For mine is every vivid ray | L |
Which partial Nature gave the day | L |
And to the music of my song | M |
A thousand nameless charms belong | M |
- | |
The friend of Happiness I dwell | N |
Belov'd alike in court or cell | N |
Where Glory lifts her ardent eye | O |
With hasty kindred zeal I fly | O |
In sun beams place the hero's form | P |
And bid his arm command the storm | P |
On swelling clouds an altar raise | Q |
And fan the tow'ring flame of praise | Q |
- | |
Oft from the lorn enthusiast's lyre | R |
My fingers strike etherial fire | S |
And give to sounds of piercing woe | T |
Extatic rapture's fervent glow | T |
Oft sooth the maniac's throbbing vein | U |
And grace her simple wilder'd strain | U |
The tribe of Pain in fetters keep | V |
Lull wounded Memory to sleep | V |
And in the mind of gloomy Care | E |
Bid Thought an angel's semblance wear | E |
- | |
Dear to each blest aerial pow'r | W |
E'en Wisdom calls me to her bow'r | W |
My songs her leisure hours beguile | X |
And teach her holy lip to smile | X |
And when the Muse with thoughtful care | E |
Has woven chaplets for her hair | E |
I let her with her myrtles twine | K |
Full many a fragrant rose of mine | K |
- | |
Then why since all the wise and gay | L |
To me a grateful homage pay | L |
Since I to all my hand extend | Y |
And liberal every heart befriend | Y |
Does Nancy from the croud retire | R |
And rend my blossoms from her lyre | R |
Though every string the loss bewail | X |
And tones of mellow sweetness fail | X |
Which us'd to charm the pensive ear | Z |
When list'ning Friendship bent to hear | Z |
- | |
Tell her I wish not to intrude | A2 |
Upon her sacred solitude | A2 |
Nor cast my undulating chain | U |
Around her glowing heart again | B2 |
No every claim I now resign | K |
Yet let some small regard be mine | K |
Let one who nurs'd her infant years | C2 |
And wip'd away some bitter tears | D2 |
Still animate the scenes around | E2 |
And make her tread on fairy ground | E2 |
Give playful sweetness to each lay | X |
And decorate the passing day | X |
- | |
Tell her if now she scorns my strain | U |
She may invoke my name in vain | U |
In vain my proffered aid implore | F |
Contemn'd I hardly pardon more | F |
- | |
She said and springing from the earth | F2 |
Attending found her suitor Mirth | F2 |
Who caught her hand with lively air | E |
And plac'd her in his silver chair | E |
Which through the yielding ether flew | X |
And quickly bore them from my view | X |
