Which can delight the eye or please the ear | B |
Who boast a polish'd mind and faultless face | A |
Awhile the councils of Philemon hear | B |
- | |
Let not pride lift the thoughtless head too high | C |
Temerity arch o'er the scornful brow | D |
Contemptuous glances arm the sparkling eye | C |
Or the high heart with self complacence glow | E |
- | |
Alas full soon the eve of life arrives | F |
Though pale Disease's train approach not nigh | C |
Short is the summer of the happiest lives | G |
If no rude storm disturbs the smiling sky | C |
- | |
This wretched body bending to the earth | H |
Once on the wings of health alert and gay | I |
Shone forth the foremost in the train of mirth | H |
And cloudless skies announc'd a beauteous day | I |
- | |
My parents oft with fond complacence view'd | J |
The elegance of my external form | K |
And thought my mind with excellence endued | J |
Bright as my genius as my fancy warm | K |
- | |
There was a time poor as I now appear | L |
I admiration met in every look | M |
And harsh as now my words may grate your ear | B |
Each tongue was silent when Philemon spoke | N |
- | |
Once could this voice make every bosom thrill | O |
As it pour'd forth the light or plaintive lay | I |
And once these fingers with superior skill | O |
Upon the lute could eloquently play | I |
- | |
By partial friendship sooth'd by flattery fann'd | P |
I learnt with conscious grace the dance to lead | Q |
To guide the Phaeton with careless hand | P |
And rule with flowing rein the prancing steed | R |
- | |
Sick with the glory of a trifler's fame | S |
By folly nurtur'd I was proud and vain | T |
Till Chastisement in kindest mercy came | S |
Though then her just decrees I dar'd arraign | T |
- | |
The form that sought so late the public view | U |
That glow'd with transport as the world admir'd | V |
Fill'd with false shame from every eye withdrew | U |
And to the shades of solitude retir'd | W |
- | |
Consum'd by fevers spiritless forlorn | X |
Blasted by apoplexy's dreadful rage | Y |
My bleeding heart by keen remembrance torn | X |
I past my prime in premature old age | Y |
- | |
I heard my parent's ill suppressed sighs | Z |
And wish'd myself upon the peaceful bier | B |
I saw the anguish of their sleepless eyes | Z |
The smile dissembled and the secret tear | A2 |
- | |
Oft with a kind of gratifying woe | E |
I recollected every former charm | B2 |
And with the spleen of a malicious foe | E |
Delighted still to keep my sorrows warm | K |
- | |
Where is the lustre of the gladsome eye | C |
The airy smile the animated mien | C2 |
The rounding lip of liveliest crimson dye | C |
So lately envied now no longer seen | C2 |
- | |
I too have gloried in my waving hair | A2 |
No ringlets now remain to raise my pride | D2 |
Nor can I now lay the white forehead bare | A2 |
And push the too luxuriant locks aside | D2 |
- | |
Thus like a child I sigh'd for pleasures past | E2 |
And lost my hours in a delusive dream | F2 |
But Reason op'd my blinded eyes at last | E2 |
And clear'd each mist by her refulgent beam | F2 |
- | |
I saw futurity before me spread | Q |
A scourge or sceptre offer'd to my view | U |
Alarm'd from Folly's erring mazes fled | Q |
And to my God with humble rev'rence drew | U |
- | |
I bow'd submissive at the holy shrine | G2 |
His mercy with warm gratitude confest | Q |
Which had reveal'd the spark of life divine | G2 |
That slumber'd in my earth enamoured breast | Q |
- | |
Had I as friendship and self love desir'd | Q |
Still suck'd delirium at the fane of praise | H2 |
I might my conscience lull'd and passions fir'd | Q |
Have lost my soul in the bewitching blaze | H2 |
- | |
Dear rising train let not my words offend | Q |
Nor the pure dictates of my love despise | Z |
To one late like yourselves attention lend | Q |
And taught by his experience be wise | Z |
- | |
Ah banish from your eye the fiend Disdain | T |
Let fair simplicity supply its place | A |
Nor longer let conceit the bosom stain | T |
The child of weakness follow'd by disgrace | A |
- | |
Should time from you each glowing beauty wrest | Q |
You will not then those self reproaches feel | I2 |
Which every eye awaken'd in my breast | Q |
And twenty winters scarce suffic'd to heel | I2 |
- | |
Nor will your friends observe each faded charm | B2 |
Since still your countenance its smile retains | J2 |
And the same lov'd companion kind and warm | K |
With unassuming manners yet remains | J2 |
