Ye blooming youth possest of every graceA
Which can delight the eye or please the earB
Who boast a polish'd mind and faultless faceA
Awhile the councils of Philemon hearB
-
Let not pride lift the thoughtless head too highC
Temerity arch o'er the scornful browD
Contemptuous glances arm the sparkling eyeC
Or the high heart with self complacence glowE
-
Alas full soon the eve of life arrivesF
Though pale Disease's train approach not nighC
Short is the summer of the happiest livesG
If no rude storm disturbs the smiling skyC
-
This wretched body bending to the earthH
Once on the wings of health alert and gayI
Shone forth the foremost in the train of mirthH
And cloudless skies announc'd a beauteous dayI
-
My parents oft with fond complacence view'dJ
The elegance of my external formK
And thought my mind with excellence enduedJ
Bright as my genius as my fancy warmK
-
There was a time poor as I now appearL
I admiration met in every lookM
And harsh as now my words may grate your earB
Each tongue was silent when Philemon spokeN
-
Once could this voice make every bosom thrillO
As it pour'd forth the light or plaintive layI
And once these fingers with superior skillO
Upon the lute could eloquently playI
-
By partial friendship sooth'd by flattery fann'dP
I learnt with conscious grace the dance to leadQ
To guide the Phaeton with careless handP
And rule with flowing rein the prancing steedR
-
Sick with the glory of a trifler's fameS
By folly nurtur'd I was proud and vainT
Till Chastisement in kindest mercy cameS
Though then her just decrees I dar'd arraignT
-
The form that sought so late the public viewU
That glow'd with transport as the world admir'dV
Fill'd with false shame from every eye withdrewU
And to the shades of solitude retir'dW
-
Consum'd by fevers spiritless forlornX
Blasted by apoplexy's dreadful rageY
My bleeding heart by keen remembrance tornX
I past my prime in premature old ageY
-
I heard my parent's ill suppressed sighsZ
And wish'd myself upon the peaceful bierB
I saw the anguish of their sleepless eyesZ
The smile dissembled and the secret tearA2
-
Oft with a kind of gratifying woeE
I recollected every former charmB2
And with the spleen of a malicious foeE
Delighted still to keep my sorrows warmK
-
Where is the lustre of the gladsome eyeC
The airy smile the animated mienC2
The rounding lip of liveliest crimson dyeC
So lately envied now no longer seenC2
-
I too have gloried in my waving hairA2
No ringlets now remain to raise my prideD2
Nor can I now lay the white forehead bareA2
And push the too luxuriant locks asideD2
-
Thus like a child I sigh'd for pleasures pastE2
And lost my hours in a delusive dreamF2
But Reason op'd my blinded eyes at lastE2
And clear'd each mist by her refulgent beamF2
-
I saw futurity before me spreadQ
A scourge or sceptre offer'd to my viewU
Alarm'd from Folly's erring mazes fledQ
And to my God with humble rev'rence drewU
-
I bow'd submissive at the holy shrineG2
His mercy with warm gratitude confestQ
Which had reveal'd the spark of life divineG2
That slumber'd in my earth enamoured breastQ
-
Had I as friendship and self love desir'dQ
Still suck'd delirium at the fane of praiseH2
I might my conscience lull'd and passions fir'dQ
Have lost my soul in the bewitching blazeH2
-
Dear rising train let not my words offendQ
Nor the pure dictates of my love despiseZ
To one late like yourselves attention lendQ
And taught by his experience be wiseZ
-
Ah banish from your eye the fiend DisdainT
Let fair simplicity supply its placeA
Nor longer let conceit the bosom stainT
The child of weakness follow'd by disgraceA
-
Should time from you each glowing beauty wrestQ
You will not then those self reproaches feelI2
Which every eye awaken'd in my breastQ
And twenty winters scarce suffic'd to heelI2
-
Nor will your friends observe each faded charmB2
Since still your countenance its smile retainsJ2
And the same lov'd companion kind and warmK
With unassuming manners yet remainsJ2
