Fragment (ii) Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDBEFFGGHHDDII JJKLMMNNOO PPEEQQWhere yonder mossy ruins lie | A |
And desolation strikes the eye | A |
A noble mansion high and fair | B |
Once rear'd its turrets in the air | B |
There infant warriors drew their breath | C |
And learn'd to scorn the fear of death | C |
In halls where martial trophies hung | D |
They listen'd while the minstrels sung | D |
Of pain and glory toil and care | B |
And all the horrid charms of war | E |
There caught the fond desire of fame | F |
And panted for a hero's name | F |
Alas too oft in youthful bloom | G |
Renown has crown'd the early tomb | G |
Has pierc'd the widow's bosom deep | H |
And taught the mother's eyes to weep | H |
She on whose tale the stripling hung | D |
While pride and sorrow rul'd her tongue | D |
His father's gallant acts to tell | I |
How bold he fought how bravely fell | I |
- | |
Methinks e'en now I hear her speak | J |
I see the tear upon her cheek | J |
The musing boy's abstracted brow | K |
And the high arching eye below | L |
The stifled sigh and anxious heave | M |
The kindling heart which dares not grieve | M |
The finely elevated head | N |
The hand upon the bosom spread | N |
Proclaim him wrought by potent charms | O |
And speak his very soul in arms | O |
- | |
Incautious zeal what hast thou done | P |
The tale has robb'd thee of thy son | P |
And while thy pious tears deplore | E |
The loss of him who lives no more | E |
Ambition wakes her restless fire | Q |
The boy will emulate his sire | Q |
