Ah me the yellow western sky turns paleA
And leaves the cheerless sons of earth to mournB
And yet I hear net in the silent valeA
A sound to tell me Arthur does returnC
-
Ah haste ye hours quick plume the loit'ring wingD
Bring back my hero crown'd with glorious spoilsE
Let bards on lofty harps his triumphs singD
And loud applause repay successful toilsE
-
Reward the flame ye great celestial pow'rsE
The noble flame that in his bosom glowsE
Inspire him Druids from your holy bow'rsE
With strength to conquer iron breasted foesE
-
With heighten'd vigour brace his nervous armF
And let his lance with ten fold fury flyG
Make him terrific by some potent charmF
And add new lightening to his piercing eyeG
-
Then may my lover gain unrivall'd fameH
The Roman banners may less proudly flowI
Then he may humble their detested nameH
And their high plumes wave o'er' a British browJ
-
Then may his chariot wheeling o'er the plainK
Hurl death and desolation all aroundL
While his intrepid front appals their trainK
And make our proud invaders bite the groundL
-
But yet I hear no lively foot advanceE
No sound of triumph greets my list'ning ear '-
And I may carve this eagle darting lanceE
For one whose voice I never more shall hearM
-
Perhaps my vows have never reach'd the skiesE
Nor heav'n propitious smil'd upon my pray'rN
And ah to morrow's crimson dawn may riseE
To plunge me in the horrors of despairO
-
Yet well he knows the dreadful spear to wieldP
Alas their fearful limbs are fenc'd with careO
And what can valour when th'extended shieldP
May leave so oft his gen'rous bosom bareO
-
Say reverend Druids can you bless in vainK
Can you in vain extend your spotless handsE
Will not heav'n listen when its priests complainK
And save its altars from unhallow'd bandsE
-
Oh yes I'll fear no more The sacred grovesE
That rear their untouch'd branches to the skiesE
Beneath whose shade its chosen servant rovesE
Hidden from weak unconsecrated eyesE
-
Beneath whose shade the choral bards rehearseE
Piercing with uprais'd eyes each mist that shroudsE
And listening catch the heav'n dictated verseE
By airs etherial wailed from the cloudsE
-
It ne'er can be but hark I hear the soundL
Of some one's step yet not the youth I loveQ
He would have flown and scarcely touch'd the groundL
Not ling'ring thus with weary caution moveR
-
The heavy wanderer approaches nighG
But the drear darkness skreens him from my viewsE
Ah gracious heav'n it was my Arthur's sighG
Which the unwilling breeze so faintly blewS
-
Oh speak inform me what I have to fearT
Speak and relieve my doubting trembling heartU
To thy Albina with a tongue sincereT
A portion of thy wretchedness impartU
-
Sweet maid replied the wounded dying youthV
In accents mournful tremulous and slowI
Yes I will ever answer thee with truthV
While yet the feeble tide of life shall flowI
-
We made the haughty Roman chiefs retireW
The tow'ring sacrilegious eagle flewS
Our bosoms swell'd with more than mortal fireX
When from the field indignant they withdrewS
-
But ill bespeaks my faint and languid tongueY
The glowing beauties of that joyful sightZ
Ill can my breast with keenest torture wrungY
Dwell on the charming terrors of the fightZ
-
To others then I leave the envied strainK
Which shall for ages rend the British airO
Nor will thy partial ear expect in vainK
To find the humble name of Arthur thereO
-
I go while now the victory is warmA2
The just reward of valour to obtainK
Soon I return clad in a nobler formA2
Again to triumph and again be slainK
-
Ah then my dear Albina cease to grieveB2
Nor at thy lover's glorious fate repineK
For though my present favour'd form I leaveB2
This constant heart shall still be only thineK
-
Alas e'en now I feel the icy handC2
Of hasty death press down my swelling heartU
E'en now I hear a sweet aerial bandC2
Summon thy faithful Arthur to departU
-
Let not thy tears an absent lover mournK
Remember that he bravely nobly diedD2
Remember that he quickly will returnK
And claim again his lov'd his destin'd brideD2
-
As thus the warrior's fainting spirits fledE2
And parting life streamed forth at every veinK
His quivering lip in whispers softly saidE2
Remember Arthur dies to live againK
-
Oh stay dear youth the hapless maiden criesE
My best lov'd Arthur but one moment stayF2
And close not yet those all enlivening eyesE
So lately lighted at the torch of dayF2
-
Ah yet once more that look of tender loveQ
Of fond regret my Arthur let me viewS
Let one more effort thy affection proveR
And bid me once once more a long adieuS
-
Now ere the moon withdraws her feeble lightZ
Ope yet again on me thy fading eyeG
He hears not memory has ta'en her flightZ
And vanish'd with that last convulsive sighG
-
Why did I variegated wreaths prepareO
To pay the conqueror every honor dueS
Or why with fillets bind my flowing hairO
And tinge my arms of the bright azure hueS
-
Oh must this constant bosom beat no moreG2
This skilful hand no more direct the spearT
Must lost Albina still her fate deploreG2
And ever drop the unavailing tearO
-
Must I no more that lovely face reviewS
Expressing each emotion of the mindH2
No more repeat a sweetly sad adieuS
No more gay chaplets on his forehead bindH2
-
His forehead high and fair with martial graceE
And bold free curls of glossy chesnut crown'dL
The full dark eye brow which adorn'd his faceE
O'erwhelming foes with terror as he frown'dL
-
His voice though strong harmoniously clearT
No more shall fill Albina with delightZ
No more shall sooth her still attentive earM
And make her fancy every sorrow lightZ
-
Farewell to love to happiness and joyI2
Yet will I cull the summer's choicest bloomJ2
Funereal chaplets shall my time employI2
And wither daily on my Arthur's tombJ2
-
As thus she mourn'd with bitterest woe opprestZ
A ray of light illumin'd all the groveK2
And a consoling voice the fair addrestZ
In the soft accents of parental loveQ
-
Though still she clasp'd her hero's valued corseE
She slowly rais'd her languid streaming eyesE
And own'd astonishment's resistless forceE
Viewing the stranger with a wild surprizeE
-
The form was clad in robes of purest whiteZ
That swept with solemn dignity the groundZ
Contrasting with the blackest gloom of nightZ
Which reign'd in awful majesty aroundZ
-
The silver beard did reverence demandZ
And told her that a holy bard was thereO
Whose shrivell'd fingers grasp'd a flaming brandZ
Which threw a lustre on the waving hairO
-
His eye possess'd the brilliant fire of youthV
United with the wisdom of the sageL2
And speaking with the simple voice of truthV
He blended the solemnity of ageL2
-
Arise thou loveliest of misfortune's trainK
And cease these weak desponding tears to shedZ
The soft effusions of thy grief restrainK
Which serve but to disturb the peaceful deadZ
-
The youth you mourn far from these scenes of woeI
To worlds of never ending joy is flownK
Where his blest bosom with delight shall glowI
And his fair temples wear a princely crownK
-
Ah then presumptuous question not the skiesE
Nor more with vain laments his loss deploreG2
Attend to this and cease your fruitless sighsE
You soon shall meet where you can part no moreG2
-
Awe struck his sacred wisdom she confestZ
Which pour'd sweet consolation on her mindZ
She cross'd her blood stain'd hands upon her breastZ
And bow'd her humble grateful head resign'dZ
-
