ACROSS the barren moors the wild wild windA
Went sweeping on and with his sobs and shrieksB
Filled the still night and tore the woof of cloudsC
Through which the moon did shed her cold clear lightD
From age to age a houseless wanderer heE
Neither of heaven nor yet of earth but doomedF
For evermore to waver 'twixt the twoG
Begging the moon with moans to take him upH
Into her charm d calm now with a wailI
Piteous and low beseeching that the earthJ
Might fold him to her bosom but in vainK
A lonely outcast frenzied does he stormL
Wildly from land to land from sea to seaE
Driving the clouds before him ploughing upH
The shaking sod splitting the tow'ring mastsM
And laying low the oaks of thousand yearsN
But I that night ne'er closed an eye in sleepO
For I did see him wand'ring o'er the moorP
A giant phantom lost in midnight gloomQ
Flitting a restless shadow 'twixt the earthJ
And round orbed moon loose tattered folds of cloudsC
Ragged with ages swept behind as heE
With Titan strides did bridge the rocky chasmsC
Oh how he sobbed and shrieked and howled and roaredR
Torn with eternal hunger after homeS
So roars the lion from Numidian peaksC
Swaying his man d head from side to sideT
As low then loud and louder swell his tonesC
Till big with horror thro' the forest loneU
They roll towards the plain curdling the bloodV
Of flocks and herds returning to the foldW
So howls the famished wolf across the wasteX
Siberian snows with glare of restless eyesC
Making a hideous brilliance in the darkY
Now worn away the wild wind's voice would dieZ
Fainting with its excess then draw a sighZ
Sounding far off and then a soughing wailI
A roar a shriek to pierce the ears of nightD
So on and on through all the livelong nightD
And all the livelong night I tossed aboutA2
His stormy voice it would not let me restB2
But woke an echo in me rolling onC2
Over my boundless waste of soul till allD2
The weary longings and the phantoms wildE2
The cravings with their thirst unquenchableD2
The doubts dark looming in the nether mistsC
Rose up in tumult shrieking with one voiceC
'Is there no goal shall we for aye and ayeZ
Be hurried restlessly through endless spaceC
Oh has the storm no nest the soul no homeS
And the foundation stone of all my beingF2
Shook and a flood brackish with tears unshedE2
Surged o'er and o'er me Tortured I aroseC
Went to the open casement and looked outE2
There was a lull Upon the gravelled talksC
And smooth cut sward patches of moonlight layD2
The clouds were swept away and sharp and clearG2
The trees did cast their shadows on the groundE2
Weird like and moonlit the wan brood of nightE2
Did flit adown the ridges of the moorsC
Up from the river and from out the treesC
Gliding with noiseless movements in and outE2
The pale moonlight making my flesh to creepO
And sick with fear I turned me to my restE2
But not to sleep for he on dew d wingsC
Had shyly fled before the moaning windE2
Who now arose again in all his strengthH2
And tore along blasting the peace of nightE2
And the old clock did toll the weary hoursC
As one by one night dropped them from her lapI2
And weary wearily I counted themJ2
With burning eyes and with a burning brainK
But loD2
What golden touch falls on the curtain nowK2
Up from my bed I spring I look I seeC
A trembling light gleam faintly in the eastE2
A trembling light while all around is darkY
It grows it deepens into liquid goldE2
And glowing orange and vermilion brightE2
It spreads along in billowy ripples likeL2
A glittering ocean when the tide rolls inM2
Smiling it greets the mist enshrouded earthJ
And draws her up with hill and tree and fieldE2
Driving the host of pris'ning fogs to flightE2
That brooding vengeance fly behind the hillsC
And gath'ring force from night swoop in one massC
Of densest black across the swooning earthJ
Trees weep and long drawn sighs float here and thereN2
Have shadows then wiped out the golden lightE2
See see the strangling cloudE2
Sinks back pierced by the arrow of the dawnO2
Her blood it trickles on the grass and allD2
The vague wan children of the night they flyZ
In dire confusion westward Hark oh harkY
The lovely morn now blows his silver hornP2
And like a lavish prodigal he strewsC
Red roses thick as sands on amber shoresC
Along heaven's eastern floor for now the sunQ2
The radiant conqueror of the night steps forthR2
Upon the gorgeous path with dazzling shieldE2
Greeted by pealing chants as he beginsC
His grand triumphal march hills vales and streamsC
Laugh glowing up to him the heavy tearsC
Wept through the night now sparkle on the grassC
Like orient pearls well knowing that the sunQ2
Will kiss them all away the merry birdsC
Shake out their plumage wet with drops and flitE2
In airy gambols twitt'ring to and froD2
The flowers smile again and shyly playD2
With morning raysC
But in the west a white mist like a dreamS2
With languid rooks floats o'er the winding streamS2
And wearied out the wind a phantom stridesC
On with the faded moon and flick'ring starT2
Towards the hazy stretch of western moorsC
His strong voice dying slowly as he goesC
But by my side a radiant spirit stoodE2
A sunbeam whispering with a smile 'BeholdE2
After the darkness still there falls a lightE2
After the storm a tranc d calm there fallsC
There is a light yea and there is a rest 'U2
And all the weary and the restless gustsC
That had been shaking at my roots of beingF2
Were lulled a silence came and dewy sleepO
Fell on my burning eyes and burning brainK
