IA
I WALK about in driving snowB
And drizzling rain splashed o'er and o'erC
No sign that radiant spring e'en nowD
Stands at the threshold of the doorE
-
No sign that fragrant violets burnF
To burst the ground and quicken forthG
No sign that swallow flights returnF
To gladden all the serious northG
-
But in my breast what flutterings hereH
What bursts of song what twitt'rings blestI
Sure the first swallow of the yearJ
Within my heart has built her nestI
-
-
IIA
Oft on the gleaming April daysK
When skies are soft and winds are warmL
And in the air a subtle charmM
And on the hill a flight of raysK
-
When silver clouds slide through the blueN
Spreading a pure transparent wingO
And all the budding branches ringO
With blithesome birds that warbling wooN
-
Beneath a pear tree's shade I layP
Deep bedded in the long thick grassQ
And heard the twitt'ring swallow passQ
And grasshoppers at endless playP
-
I knew though flowers mine eyes did screenR
That butterflies danced in the lightS
For breaking sunbeams in their flightS
They flashed their shadows on the greenR
-
And gazing up in dreamful easeT
Where quiv'ring frail on shivery spraysK
The blossoms mix a milky mazeK
What hum of golden girted beesT
-
So lily white the tree beholdU
Seems set on fire by burnished lightsV
And shoal on honeying shoal alightsV
And turns the snowy boughs to goldU
-
Thus on my spirit music fraughtW
Burst swarms of glimm'ring melodiesV
And like the yellow banded beesV
Make honey of my flutt'ring thoughtW
-
-
IIIA
Sometimes on my soul will throngX
Such a blossom burst of songX
That I cannot seize it allY
Letting sweetest measures fallY
-
Thus a child feels sudden sunkZ
On a crowding violet bankA2
And delighted and amazedB2
Gathers in a flush d hasteC2
-
Gathers them so fast and fleetD2
Little fingers cannot meetD2
O'er the lot and swifter stillE2
Than they cull the wealth they spillE2
-
To that sweets o'erflooded nookF2
Casting back one longing lookF2
At the last it takes awayP
But one little odorous sprayP
-
Yet through many a day and nightS
Flinging back the fragrant sightS
Cleaves to face and hands and feetD2
All the woodland's violets sweetD2
-
-
IVG2
Fain would I sing of each sweet sight and soundH2
Of fleeting odours wheeling round and roundH2
Of sunbeams dancing on the virgin grassV
Of flocks of fleecy clouds that glimmer as they passV
-
Of larks that lost in the blue ether floatI2
Of the weird blackbird's dream enchanted noteI2
While the glad hedges palpitate with songX
That drops like murm'ring rain the dewy fields amongJ2
-
Of blooming bushes and of budding treesV
Of flaming flowers dotting the grassy leasV
Of glowing pools and of the babbling rillsV
That flash through azure mists slumb'ring on folded hillsV
-
Fain would I sing sweet April time of theeK2
And mingle in thy wantonness of gleeK2
But thou such overwealth of sweets dost flingO
My heart is all too full too full to speak or singO
-

VK2
There's somewhat in the loveliness of springO
In the young light and in the fragrant bloomL2
In the sweet song that each soft breeze doth wingO
In the bright flowers that rise from earth's dark wombL2
-
Which fills with sadness the presentient mindM2
And for a far off home awakes the sighG2
Which makes us gaze with longings undefinedM2
On dim blue hills and weep we know not whyG2
-
-
VIG2
Oh birds winged voices children of the lightS
Whose song is love whose love is melodyK2
Shedding o'er hedge and field and bush and treeK2
Your tuneful joy and musical delightS
-
Making the air the earth the heavens brightS
Melodious tender sad and gay and freeK2
By all these gifts true poets born are yeK2
Love circumscribes alone your restless flightS
-
Poets I say Ah not like poets hereH
That wander forth alone companionlessV
Whose lays are wrung from them by care and painN2
Who sing while blinded by the hot salt tearO2
-
Not such are ye but free from all distressV
Ye with the sunlight range o'er land and mainN2
-
-
VIIG2
Oh soft sweet air of early springO
Again thou float'st on viewless wingO
Coax'st snowdrops their white bells to ringO
And wak'st the blackbird up to singO
-
Again upon the bright'ning leaK2
Beneath the budding bursting treeK2
The toddling baby mites I seeK2
Skip jump and frisk in lamb like gleeK2
-
But I am sad I know not whyG2
My breast heaves with the long drawn sighG2
The tear rounds slowly in mine eyeG2
I'd like to lay me down and dieG2
-
-
VIIIG2
The blooming hedge the budding groveG2
Resound with notes of joy and loveG2
The gleaming bush the glimm'ring treeK2
Live with a dewy melodyK2
-
Along the meadows flashing brightS
Run trills of shrill and sweet delightS
E'en the small snowy clouds amongJ2
Gush showers on showers of silver songX
But thou my heart oh tell me whyG2
Hast thou no language but a sighG2
-
-
IXK2
Like a flower fall of rainN2
Like a snowy elfin trainN2
Like stray gleams of moonlight fairO2
Do you shift upon the airO2
Do you flutter on the breezeK2
Do you fall upon the leasK2
Blossoms of the apple treesK2
Then on earth's bosom slow ye fade awayP
Like to a low and sweetly dying layP
-
-
XK2
With thousand gaps the earth is splitP2
By sunbeams wounded o'er and o'erC
My heart it acheth bit by bitP2
Life's heat and dust have made it soreE
-
When wilt thou fall from clouds aboveG2
In silver showers refreshing rainN2
When wilt thou come reviving loveG2
With dew and make me whole againQ2
-
A little while big drops will slakeX
Oh earth thy thirst's hot agonyK2
But till my fevered heart doth breakX
Will solace ever come to meK2
