Casts his eternal shadow on the strands | B |
And veiled in cloud inexorably stands | B |
While vaulting round his adamantine steep | A |
Embattled breakers clamorously leap | A |
Sun garlanded and hope uplifted bands | B |
But soon with waters shattered in the sands | B |
Slowly recoiling back to ocean creep | A |

So sternly dost thou tower above us Fate | C |
For still our eager hearts exultant beat | D |
Borne in the hurrying tide of life elate | C |
And dashing break against thy marble feet | D |
But would Hope's rainbow aureole round us fleet | D |
Without these hurtling shocks of man's estate | C |
