To The Right Honourable The Lady Sarah Cowper. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CDEEFFGHIIJJ KKLLMMNNOO

Let me the Honour soon obtainA
For which I long have hop'd in vainA
Since I alas am now confin'dB
Your Visit would be doubly kindB
-
What Sorrows have I not to fearC
Ty'd to the Bed of Sickness hereD
When all that's human quits the PlaceE
And Winter shews his horrid FaceE
Whilst Desolation proudly stalksF
Along the dull deserted WalksF
Methinks the Skies already lourG
Loud from the Hills the Torrents pourH
The Shops are shut the Days are darkI
And scarce a Dog is left to barkI
O shield me from the dreadful StormsJ
Which my distemper'd Fancy formsJ
-
The thoughtless Fair the Toilet prizeK
There practise Smiles and point their EyesK
But Cowper negligent of ArtL
Chose early wise the better PartL
Yet from your Mind some Moments spareM
The Stranger be a while your CareM
Who now beneath Affliction bendsN
Far from her Country and her FriendsN
Come and my anxious Heart relieveO
For in your Presence who could grieveO
