Tho' great Longinus claims thy aiding HandA
And hopes thro' thee t'instruct a barb'rous LandA
Where vile Conceits the Pow'r of Wit confoundB
And true Sublimity is lost in SoundB
Where Folly dress'd ten thousand various WaysC
The Bar the Play house and the Pulpit swaysC
Yet to my Verse thy kind Attention lendD
Pardon the Poet and indulge the FriendD
-
From Noise and Nonsense and vain Laughte freeE
I steal a thoughtful Hour and give to theeE
To thee Conductor of my heedless YouthF
Who taught me first to rev'rence Sense and TruthF
Virtue to praise and boldly Vice derideG
With all the Pomp of Fashion on her SideG
-
Behold the Scene a motley Tribe composeH
Wives Widows Maids and intermingled BeauxI
All Orders Ages in one League uniteJ
And to dear Passage consecrate the NightJ
Now the Dice rattle in the sounding BoxK
Now groans the Table with repeated KnocksK
Delightful Musick to the Gamester's EarL
While ev'ry Bosom beats with Hope or FearM
A Pass resounds What wond'rous Transports riseN
In Celia's Breast and lighten in her EyesN
She sweeps the Board The Fop with ardent GazeC
Admires the Beauty that her Arm displaysC
-
But who unmov'd can bear the piteous SightJ
While Cynthia frets and raves at Fortune's SpiteJ
Fled from her Cheek are ev'ry Love and GraceO
And all the Fury threatens in her FaceO
Distracted lost with Grief and Rage o'ercomeP
She quits the Dice and flies to storm at homeP
When I a Curse implore may courteous FateQ
With such a Consort curse the Man I hateQ
But is there One amongst the Many foundB
Adorn'd with Modesty with Reason crown'dB
Who treads the slipp'ry Paths of Youth with CareR
And uninfected breathes in tainted AirR
If such there be kind Heav'n afford thy AidS
And soften to my Wish the virtuous MaidS
-
See the Belle flutter with the sprightly BeauI
They trip it on the light fantastic ToeI
Nor Words nor Sighs their am'rous Thoughts impartT
They dance and glitter at each other's HeartT
With honest Scorn survey yon various CroudT
Of supple Slaves or Lords of Titles proudT
Stiff nodding Fools a Mob in MasqueradeT
Whom Honours brand and Dignities upbraidT
-
Yet some there are with Worth and Wisdom blestT
A noble Few who satirize the restT
Who scorn to boast their great Fore father's RaysC
Shine of themselves and mingle Blaze with BlazeC
And such is Orrery whose gen'rous MindT
Still prone to Pity feels for human KindT
A Zeal for Piety inflames his BreastT
Temper'd with Charity in Meekness dress'dT
Grandeur and Ease his ev'ry Action guideT
He nor assumes nor condescends in PrideT
Add sprightly Wit by prudent Laws confin'dT
A Judgment sober and by Books refin'dT
Add that the Muses ev'ry Charm dispenseU
To tune his Voice and beautify the SenseU
-
This to my Friend And O may this inspiteT
Love of fair Fame and fan the sacred FireV
Dare to have Taste and urge thy glorious ToilW
To teach th' Unknowing and to please a BoyleW
