To A Lady Who Was Libell'd. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCDDEEFFGH IIAAJJKKDDLM NNOO

When Cynthia Regent of the TidesA
Pale in meridian Pride presidesA
A Sov'reign Pow'r the Goddess claimsB
O'er Seas and Sea supplying StreamsC
The River of the richest SourceD
With Ease she turns and checks his CourseD
His crystal Clearness can defileE
With ev'ry Filth and Salt as vileE
However strong and smooth and pureF
Her Tyranny he must endureF
Till her Dominion in the WainG
He clears and is himself againH
-
Thus over black benighted BrainsI
Fell Envy baleful Goddess reignsI
O'er mortal Passions pale presidesA
Passions the Soul's tumultuous TidesA
Which in their fierce resistless SwayJ
Invade all Merit in their WayJ
With Ease the clearest Truths confuteK
With Ease the purest Worth polluteK
Check ev'ry Virtue in its CourseD
And taint impetuous to its SourceD
The Current of the fairest FameL
By forcing Filth into the StreamM
-
So are you sully'd for a SeasonN
Till Rage recoils and yields to ReasonN
Then turns the Tide your Credit clearsO
And all your real Worth appearsO
