Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDD EEBBFFBBBBGHIIJJBB BBKKOnce Jupiter from out the Skies | A |
Beheld a thousand Temples rise | A |
The Goddess Fortune all invok'd | B |
To Jove an Altar seldom smoak'd | B |
The God resolv'd to make Inspection | C |
What had occasion'd this Defection | C |
And bid the Goddess tell the Arts | D |
By which she won deluded Hearts | D |
- | |
My Arts says she Great Jove you know | E |
That I do ev'ry Thing below | E |
I make my Vot'ries dine on Plate | B |
I give the gilded Coach of State | B |
Bestow the glitt'ring Gems that deck | F |
The fair Lavinia's lovely Neck | F |
I make Novella Nature's Boast | B |
And raise Valeria to a Toast | B |
'Tis I who give the Stupid Taste | B |
Or make the Poets lie at least | B |
My fav'rite Sons whene'er they please | G |
Can Palaces in Desarts raise | H |
Cut out Canals make Fountains play | I |
And make the dreary Waste look gay | I |
Ev'n Vice seems Virtue by my Smiles | J |
I gild the Villain's gloomy Wiles | J |
Nay almost raise him to a God | B |
While crowded Levees wait his Nod | B |
- | |
Enough the Thunderer reply'd | B |
But say whom have you satisfy'd | B |
These boasted Gifts are thine I own | K |
But know Content is mine alone | K |
