Ierne's now our royal CareA
We lately fix'd our Vice roy thereA
How near was she to be undoneB
Till pious Love inspir'd her SonB
What cannot our Vice gerent doC
As Poet and as Patriot tooC
Let his Success our Subjects swayD
Our Inspirations to obeyD
Let beaten Paths no more be trac'dE
But study to correct your TasteE
-
No Simile shall be begunB
With rising or with setting SunB
And let the secret Head of NileF
Be ever banish'd from your IsleF
-
When wretched Lovers live on AirA
In Pity the Chameleon spareA
And when you'd make a Hero granderG
Forget he's like a SalamanderG
-
No Son of mine shall dare to sayD
Aurora usher'd in the DayD
-
You all agree I make no DoubtH
The Prophet's Mantle's quite worn outH
-
The Bird of Fove shall toil no moreI
To teach the humble Wren to soarI
-
Your tragic Heroes shall not rantJ
Nor Shepherds use poetic CantJ
Simplicity alone can graceK
The Manners of the rural RaceK
-
When Damon's Soul shall take its FlightL
Tho' Poets have the second SightL
No Trail of Light shall upwards riseM
Nor a new Star adorn the SkiesM
For who can hope to place one thereA
So glorious as Belinda's HairA
Yet if his Name you eternizeM
And must exalt him to the SkiesM
Without a Star it may be doneB
So Tickell mourn'd his AddisonB
-
If Anna's happy Reign you praiseM
Say not a Word of Halcyon DaysM
Nor let my Vot'ries shew their SkillN
In apeing Lines from Cooper's HillN
For know I cannot bear to hearO
The Mimickry of deep yet clearP
-
Whene'er my Vice roy is address'dQ
Against the Phoenix I protestQ
-
When Kelly's Beauties you surveyD
Forget they're like the Milky WayD
-
When Poets soar in youthful StrainsM
No Phaeton to hold the ReinsM
-
CUPID shall ne'er mistake anotherG
Not ev'n Eliza for his MotherG
Nor shall his Darts at Random flyR
From Magazines in Rochford's EyeR
-
When Boyle's exalted Genius shinesM
Distinguish'd in your noblest LinesM
With his own Worth your Patron graceM
And let Maecenas sleep in PeaceM
-
When you describe a lovely GirlS
No Coral Lips or Teeth of PearlS
-
With Women Compounds I am cloy'dQ
Which only pleas'd in Biddy FloydQ
For foreign Aid what need they roamT
Whom Fate hath amply bless'd at HomeT
Unerring Heav'n with bounteous HandQ
Has form'd a Model for your LandQ
Whom Fove endow'd with ev'ry GraceM
The Glory of the Granard RaceM
Now destin'd by the Pow'rs divineU
The Blessing of another LineU
Then would you paint a matchless DameV
And raise her to immortal FameV
Invoke not Cytherea's AidQ
Nor borrow from the Blue ey'd MaidQ
Nor need you on the Graces callW
Take Qualities from DonegalW
