On the banks of the Mersey o'er on Cheshire sideA
Lies Runcorn that's best known to fameB
By Transporter Bridge as takes folks over t'streamC
Or else brings them back across sameB
-
In days afore Transporter Bridge were put upD
A ferryboat lay in the slipE
And old Ted the boatman would row folks acrossF
At per tuppence per person per tripE
-
Now Runcorn lay over on one side of streamC
And Widnes on t'other side stoodG
And as nobody wanted to go either placeH
Well the trade wasn't any too goodG
-
One evening to Ted's superlative surpriseI
Three customers came into viewJ
A Mr and Mrs Ramsbottom it wereK
And Albert their little son tooJ
-
How much for the three Mr Ramsbottom askedL
As his hand to his pocket did dipE
Ted said Same for three as it would be for oneM
Per tuppence per person per tripE
-
You're not charging tuppence for that little ladN
Said Mother her eyes flashing wildO
Per tuppence per person per trip answered TedP
Per woman per man or per childO
-
Fivepence for three that's the most that I'll payQ
Said Father Don't waste time in talkR
Per tuppence per person per trip answered TedP
And them as can't pay 'as to walkR
-
We can walk an' all said Father Come MotherK
It's none so deep weather's quite mildO
So into the water the three of them steppedS
The father the mother the childO
-
The further they paddled the deeper it gotT
But they wouldn't give in once begunM
In the spirit that's made Lancashire what she isU
They'd sooner be drownded than doneM
-
Very soon the old people were up to their necksV
And the little lad clean out of sightW
Said Father Where's Albert And Mother repliedA
I've got hold of his hand he's all rightW
-
Well just at that moment Pa got an ideaX
And floundering back to old Ted He saidP
We've walked half way Come tak' us the restY
For half price that's a penny a headP
-
But Ted wasn't standing for none of that thereZ
And making an obstinate lipE
Per tuppence per person per trip Ted repliedA
Per trip or per part of per tripE
-
All right then said Father let me tak' the boatA2
And I'll pick up the others half wayQ
I'll row them across and I'll bring the boat backB2
And thruppence in t'bargain I'll payQ
-
T'were money for nothing Ted answered Right hoC2
And Father got hold of the scullsV
With the sharp end of boat towards middle of streamC
He were there in a couple of pullsV
-
He got Mother out it were rather a jobD2
With the water she weighed half a tonM
Then pushing the oar down the side of the boatA2
Started fishing around for his sonM
-
When poor little Albert came up to the topE2
His collars were soggy and limpF2
And with holding his breath at the bottom so longG2
His face were as red as a shrimpF2
-
Pa took them across and he brought the boat backB2
And he said to old Ted on the slipE
Wilt' row me across by me'sen Ted saidP
Aye at per tuppence per person per tripE
-
When they got t'other side Father laughed fit to bustH2
He'd got best of bargain you seeV
He'd worked it all out and he'd got his own wayQ
And he'd paid nobbut fivepence for threeV
