I'll tell of the Magna CharterA
As were signed at the Barons' commandB
On Runningmead Island in t'middle of t'ThamesC
By King John as were known as LacklandB
-
Some say it were wrong of the BaronsD
Their will on the King so to thrustB
But you'll see if you look at both sides of the caseE
That they had to do something or bustB
-
For John from the moment they crowned himF
Started acting so cunning and slyG
Being King of course he couldn't do wrongH
But by gum he'd a proper good tryG
-
He squandered the ratepayer's moneyI
All their cattle and corn he did takeJ
'Til there wasn't a morsel of bread in the landB
And the folk had to manage with cakeJ
-
The way he behaved to young ArtherG
Went to show as his feelings were badB
He tried to get Hubert to poke out his eyesK
Which is no way to treat a young ladB
-
It were all right his being a tyrantB
To vassals and folk of that classL
But he tried on his tricks with the Barons 'an allM
And that's where he made a Faux PassL
-
He started bombarding their castlesN
And burning them over their headsO
'Till there wasn't enough castles left to go roundB
And they had to sleep six in a bedB
-
So they went to the King in a bodyI
And their spokesman Fitzwalter by nameP
He opened the 'ole in his helmet and saidB
Concil latory like What's the gameP
-
The King starts to shilly and shallyM
He sits and he haws and he humsQ
'Till the Barons in rage started gnashing their teethR
And them with no teeth gnashed their gumsQ
-
Said Fitz though the 'ole in his 'elmetB
It was you as put us in this plightB
And the King having nothing to say to this 'ereG
Murmured Leave your address and I'll writeB
-
This angered the gallant FitzwalterG
He stamped on the floor with his footB
And were starting to give John a rare ticking offS
When the 'ole in his 'elmet fell shutB
-
We'll get him a Magna CharterG
Said Fitz when his face he had freedB
Said the Barons That's right and if ones not enoughT
Get a couple and happen they'll breedB
-
So they set about making a charterG
When at finish they'd got it all drawn upU
It looked like a paper on cattle diseaseV
Or the entries for next years World CupU
-
Next day King John unsuspectingW
And having the afternoon freeG
To Runningmead Island had taken a boatB
And were having some shrimps for his teaG
-
He had just pulled the 'ead off a big 'unI
And were pinching its tail with his thumbX
When up came a barge load of BaronsD
Who said We thought you'd be here so we've comeX
-
When they told him they'd brought Magna CharterG
The King seemed to go kind of limpY
But minding his manners he took off his hatB
And said Thanks very much have a shrimpY
-
You'd best sign at once said FitzwalterG
If you don't I'll tell thee for a startB
The next coronation will happen quite soonI
And you won't be there to take partB
-
So they spread Charter out on t'tea tableM
And John signed his name like a lambZ
His writing in places was sticky and thickA2
Through dipping his pen in the jamZ
-
And it's through that there Magna CharterG
As were signed by the Barons of oldB
That in England today we can do what we likeB2
Just so long as we do what we're toldB
