| Our British born swimmers had tried it | E |
| But that was as far as they'd got | D |

| So great was the outcry in England | F |
| Darts Players neglected their beer | G |
| And the Chanc'Ior proclaimed from the Woolsack | H |
| As Joe Lee were the chap for this 'ere | G |

| For in swimming baths all round the country | G |
| Joe were noted for daring and strength | I |
| Quite often he'd dived in the deep end | J |
| And thought nothing of swimming a length | I |

| So they wrote him C o Workhouse Master | G |
| Joe were spending the summer with him | K |
| And promised him two Christmas puddings | L |
| If over the Channel he'd swim | K |

| Joe jumped into t' breach like an 'ero | G |
| He said All their fears I'll relieve | M |
| And it isn't their puddings I'm after | G |
| As I told them last Christmas Eve | M |

| Though many have tackled the Channel | N |
| From Grisnez to Dover that is | O |
| For the honour and glory of England | F |
| I'll swim from Dover to Gris niz | O |

| As soon as his words were made public | H |
| The newspapers gathered around | P |
| And offered to give him a pension | C |
| If he lost both his legs and got drowned | P |

| He borrowed a tug from the Navy | G |
| To swim in the shelter alee | N |
| The Wireless folk lent him a wavelength | Q |
| And the Water Board lent him the sea | G |

| His wife strapped a mascot around him | K |
| The tears to his eyes gently stole | N |
| 'Twere some guiness corks she had collected | R |
| And stitched to an old camisole | N |

| He entered the water at daybreak | H |
| A man with a camera stood near | G |
| He said Hurry up and get in lad | S |
| You're spoiling my view of the pier | G |

| At last he were in he were swimming | H |
| With a beautiful overarm stroke | H |
| When the men on the tug saw with horror | G |
| That the rope he were tied to had broke | H |

| Then down came a fog thick as treacle | N |
| The tug looked so distant and dim | K |
| A voice shouted Help I am drowning | H |
| Joe listened and found it were him | K |
| - | |
| The tug circled round till they found him | K |
| They hauled him aboard like a sack | H |
| Tied a new tow rope around him | K |
| Smacked him and then threw him back | H |
| - | |
| 'Twere at sunset or just a bit later | G |
| That he realized all wasn't right | T |
| For the tow rope were trailing behind him | K |
| And the noose round his waist getting tight | T |

| One hasty glance over his shoulder | G |
| He saw in a flash what were wrong | H |
| The Captain had shut off his engine | C |
| Joe were towing the Tugboat along | H |

| On and on through the darkness he paddled | U |
| Till he knew he were very near in | V |
| By the way he kept bumping the bottom | W |
| And hitting the stones with his chin | V |

| Was it Grisniz he'd reached No it wasn't | X |
| The treacherous tide in its track | H |
| Had carried him half way to Blackpool | N |
| And he had to walk all the way back | H |
