Would you hear a Wild tale of adventureA
Of a hero who tackled the seaB
A super man swimming the oceanC
Then hark to the tale of Joe LeeB
-
Our Channel our own Straits of DoverA
Had heen swum by an alien lotD
Our British born swimmers had tried itE
But that was as far as they'd gotD
-
So great was the outcry in EnglandF
Darts Players neglected their beerG
And the Chanc'Ior proclaimed from the WoolsackH
As Joe Lee were the chap for this 'ereG
-
For in swimming baths all round the countryG
Joe were noted for daring and strengthI
Quite often he'd dived in the deep endJ
And thought nothing of swimming a lengthI
-
So they wrote him C o Workhouse MasterG
Joe were spending the summer with himK
And promised him two Christmas puddingsL
If over the Channel he'd swimK
-
Joe jumped into t' breach like an 'eroG
He said All their fears I'll relieveM
And it isn't their puddings I'm afterG
As I told them last Christmas EveM
-
Though many have tackled the ChannelN
From Grisnez to Dover that isO
For the honour and glory of EnglandF
I'll swim from Dover to Gris nizO
-
As soon as his words were made publicH
The newspapers gathered aroundP
And offered to give him a pensionC
If he lost both his legs and got drownedP
-
He borrowed a tug from the NavyG
To swim in the shelter aleeN
The Wireless folk lent him a wavelengthQ
And the Water Board lent him the seaG
-
His wife strapped a mascot around himK
The tears to his eyes gently stoleN
'Twere some guiness corks she had collectedR
And stitched to an old camisoleN
-
He entered the water at daybreakH
A man with a camera stood nearG
He said Hurry up and get in ladS
You're spoiling my view of the pierG
-
At last he were in he were swimmingH
With a beautiful overarm strokeH
When the men on the tug saw with horrorG
That the rope he were tied to had brokeH
-
Then down came a fog thick as treacleN
The tug looked so distant and dimK
A voice shouted Help I am drowningH
Joe listened and found it were himK
-
The tug circled round till they found himK
They hauled him aboard like a sackH
Tied a new tow rope around himK
Smacked him and then threw him backH
-
'Twere at sunset or just a bit laterG
That he realized all wasn't rightT
For the tow rope were trailing behind himK
And the noose round his waist getting tightT
-
One hasty glance over his shoulderG
He saw in a flash what were wrongH
The Captain had shut off his engineC
Joe were towing the Tugboat alongH
-
On and on through the darkness he paddledU
Till he knew he were very near inV
By the way he kept bumping the bottomW
And hitting the stones with his chinV
-
Was it Grisniz he'd reached No it wasn'tX
The treacherous tide in its trackH
Had carried him half way to BlackpoolN
And he had to walk all the way backH
