Sam Small had retired from the ArmyA
In the old Duke of Wellington's timeB
So when present unpleasantness startedC
He were what you might call past his primeB
-
He'd lived for some years in retirementD
And knew nowt of war if you pleaseE
Till they blasted and bombed his allotmentD
And shelled the best part of his peasE
-
'T were as if bugles called Sam to dutyA
For his musket he started to searchF
He found it at last in the Hen houseG
Buff Orpingtons had it for perchF
-
Straight off to the Fusilliers' depotH
He went to rejoin his old troopI
Where he found as they couldn't recruit HimJ
Until his age group was called upK
-
Now Sam wasn't getting no youngerL
Past the three score and ten years was heA
And he reckoned by time they reached his age groupI
He'd be very near ten score and threeA
-
So he took up the matter with ChurchillM
Who said I don't know what to doN
Never was there a time when so manyA
Came asking so much from so fewN
-
I don't want no favours Sam answeredO
Don't think as I'm one of that mobP
All I'm asking is give me the tools ladQ
And let me help finish the jobP
-
I'll fit you in somewhere said WinnieA
Old soldiers we must not discardR
Then seeing he'd got his own musketS
He sent him to join the Home GuardR
-
They gave Sam a coat with no stripes onT
In spite of the service he'd seenU
Which considering he'd been a King's sergeantD
Kind of rankled you know what I meanU
-
He said I come back to the ArmyA
Expecting my country's thanksV
And the first thing I find when I get hereW
Is that I've been reduced to the ranksV
-
He found all the lads sympatheticX
They agreed that 'twere a disgraceY
Except one old chap in the cornerL
With a nutcracker kind of a faceY
-
Said the old fella Who do you think you areZ
The last to appear on the sceneU
And you start off by wanting promotionA2
Last come last served see what I meanU
-
Said Sam Wasn't I at CorunnaU
And when company commander got shotB2
Didn't I lead battalion to victoryA
Said the old fella No you did notB2
-
I didn't said Sam quite indignentB2
Why in every fight Wellington foughtB2
Wasn't I at his right hand to guard himJ
Said old chap You were nowt of the sortB2
-
What do you know of Duke and his battlesC2
Said Sam with a whithering lookD2
Said the old man I ought to know somethingE2
Between you and me I'm the DukeF2
-
And if you should look in any eveningE2
You'll find them both in the canteenU
Ex Commander in Chief and ex SergeantB2
Both just Home Guards you know what I meanU
