Richard the First Coeur de LionA
Is a name that we speak of with prideB
Though he only lived six months in EnglandC
From his birth to the day that he diedB
-
He spent all his time fighting battlesD
Dressed up in most rigid attireE
For he had his suits made by the BlacksmithF
And his underwear knitted of wireE
-
He married a lady from FlandersG
Berengaria's what they called herE
She turned out a good wife to RichardH
In spite of a name like that thereI
-
For when he came home from his fightingJ
She'd bandage the wounds in his sconceK
And every time a snake bit himL
She'd suck out the poison at onceM
-
In their 'ouse they'd a minstrel called BlondelN
To amuse them at t'end of the day'H
And the King had but one thing against himL
He had nobbut one tune he could playN
-
The Queen saw nowt wrong with the numberE
And would have it again and againO
And when Richard said Put a sock in itH
She'd give 'im a look full of painP
-
The King got fed up at the finishQ
And were so sick of 'earing it playedH
That he packed his spare suit on a wagonA
And went off and joined the CrusadeH
-
He got fighting the moment he landedH
And though Saracen lads did their bestH
He cut off their heads in such numbersG
That the hatmakers lodged a protestH
-
The Sultan whose name were SaladinR
Thought he'd best try this business to stemS
So he rode up to Richard and told himL
He mustn't do that there to themS
-
Said Richard Oh Who's going to stop meT
Said Saladin I will and quickU
So the King poked his sword at the SultanA
Who in turn swiped his skimpter at DickU
-
They fought all that day without ceasingJ
They fought till at last they both sawV
That each was a match for the otherE
So they chucked it and called it a drawV
-
As Richard rode home in the moonlightH
He heard someone trying to croonW
And there by the roadside stood BlondelN
Still playing his signature tuneW
-
He'd worked out his passage from EnglandH
In search of his Master and LordH
And had swum the last part of the journeyT
'Cos his tune got 'im thrown overboardH
-
This meeting filled Richard with panicU
He rode off and never drew reinP
Till he got past the Austrian borderE
And felt he could breathe once againO
-
He hid in a neighbouring CastleN
But he hadn't been there very longX
When one night just outside his windowH
Stood Blondel still singing his songX
-
This 'ere took the heart out of RichardH
He went home dejected and lowH
And the very next fight he got intoH
He were killed without striking a blowH
