Is a name that we speak of with pride | B |
Though he only lived six months in England | C |
From his birth to the day that he died | B |
- | |
He spent all his time fighting battles | D |
Dressed up in most rigid attire | E |
For he had his suits made by the Blacksmith | F |
And his underwear knitted of wire | E |
- | |
He married a lady from Flanders | G |
Berengaria's what they called her | E |
She turned out a good wife to Richard | H |
In spite of a name like that there | I |
- | |
For when he came home from his fighting | J |
She'd bandage the wounds in his sconce | K |
And every time a snake bit him | L |
She'd suck out the poison at once | M |
- | |
In their 'ouse they'd a minstrel called Blondel | N |
To amuse them at t'end of the day' | H |
And the King had but one thing against him | L |
He had nobbut one tune he could play | N |
- | |
The Queen saw nowt wrong with the number | E |
And would have it again and again | O |
And when Richard said Put a sock in it | H |
She'd give 'im a look full of pain | P |
- | |
The King got fed up at the finish | Q |
And were so sick of 'earing it played | H |
That he packed his spare suit on a wagon | A |
And went off and joined the Crusade | H |
- | |
He got fighting the moment he landed | H |
And though Saracen lads did their best | H |
He cut off their heads in such numbers | G |
That the hatmakers lodged a protest | H |
- | |
The Sultan whose name were Saladin | R |
Thought he'd best try this business to stem | S |
So he rode up to Richard and told him | L |
He mustn't do that there to them | S |
- | |
Said Richard Oh Who's going to stop me | T |
Said Saladin I will and quick | U |
So the King poked his sword at the Sultan | A |
Who in turn swiped his skimpter at Dick | U |
- | |
They fought all that day without ceasing | J |
They fought till at last they both saw | V |
That each was a match for the other | E |
So they chucked it and called it a draw | V |
- | |
As Richard rode home in the moonlight | H |
He heard someone trying to croon | W |
And there by the roadside stood Blondel | N |
Still playing his signature tune | W |
- | |
He'd worked out his passage from England | H |
In search of his Master and Lord | H |
And had swum the last part of the journey | T |
'Cos his tune got 'im thrown overboard | H |
- | |
This meeting filled Richard with panic | U |
He rode off and never drew rein | P |
Till he got past the Austrian border | E |
And felt he could breathe once again | O |
- | |
He hid in a neighbouring Castle | N |
But he hadn't been there very long | X |
When one night just outside his window | H |
Stood Blondel still singing his song | X |
- | |
This 'ere took the heart out of Richard | H |
He went home dejected and low | H |
And the very next fight he got into | H |
He were killed without striking a blow | H |
