'E talked in a voice like a pound o' plums | H |

And 'e didn't remember to take it out | S |
The first time 'e let fly | J |

But next day they spoke of a tinker's moke | E |
Being killed by a cork in Crewe | U |

At three 'undred yards Sam shut 'is eyes | V |

And walked away quite lame | L |

At two 'undred yards Sam fired so wild | S |
That the Sergeant feared for 'is skin | W |
And the lads all cleared int' t' neighbouring field | S |

And went off with a noise like a blizzard | S |
And down came a crow looking fair surprised | S |
With a ram rod through 'is gizzard | S |

Said the Sergeant Don't waste shot | S |
Yer'd best fix bayonets and charge my lad | S |
It's the only chance yer've got | S |

Sam kept loading 'is gun while the Sergeant spoke | E |
Till the bullets peeped out of the muzzle | M |
When all of a sudden it went off bang | E |
What made it go were a puzzle | M |

The bullets flew out in a kind of a spray | J |
And everything round got peppered | S |
When they counted 'is score 'e'd got eight bulls eyes | V |
Four magpies two lambs and a shepherd | S |

And the Sergeant for this got a D C M | A2 |
And the Colonel an O B E | Y |
Lieutenant Bird got the D S O | B2 |
And Sam got five days C B | Y |
