I'll tell of the Magna CharterA
As were signed at the Barons' commandB
On Runningmead Island in t' middle of t' ThamesC
By King John as were known as Lack LandB
-
Some say it were wrong of the BaronsD
Their will on the King so to thrustE
But you'll see if you look at both sides of the caseF
That they had to do something or bustE
-
For John from the moment they crowned himG
Started acting so cunning and slyH
Being King of course he couldn't do wrongI
But by gum he'd a proper good tryH
-
He squandered the ratepayers' moneyJ
All their cattle and corn did he takeK
'Til there wasn't a morsel of bread in the landB
And folk had to manage on cakeK
-
The way he behaved to young ArthurA
Went to show as his feelings was badL
He tried to get Hubert to poke out his eyesM
Which is no way to treat a young ladL
-
It were all right him being a tyrantN
To vassals and folks of that classO
But he tried on his tricks with the Barons an' allP
And that's where he made a 'faux pas'O
-
He started bombarding their castlesO
And burning them over their headQ
'Til there wasn't enough castles left to go roundR
And they had to sleep six in a bedQ
-
So they went to the King in a bodyJ
And their spokesman Fitzwalter by nameS
He opened the 'ole in his 'elmet and saidQ
Conciliatory like What's the gameS
-
The King starts to shilly and shallyP
He sits and he haws and he humsO
'Til the Barons in rage started gnashing their teethT
And them with no teeth gnashed their gumsO
-
Said Fitz through the 'ole in his 'elmetQ
It was you as put us in this plightQ
And the King having nothing to say to this murmuredQ
Leave your address and I'll writeQ
-
This angered the gallant FitzwalterA
He stamped on the floor with his footQ
And were starting to give John a rare ticking offU
When the 'ole in his 'elmet fell shutQ
-
We'll get him a Magna CharterA
Said Fitz when his face he had freedQ
Said the Barons That's right and if one's not enoughV
Get a couple and happen they'll breed ''-
-
So they set about making a CharterA
When at finish they'd got it drawn upW
It looked like a paper on cattle diseaseO
Or the entries for t' Waterloo CupW
-
Next day King John all unsuspectingX
And having the afternoon freeA
To Runningmead Island had taken a boatQ
And were having some shrimps for his teaA
-
He'd just pulled the 'ead off a big 'unJ
And were pinching its tail with his thumbY
When up came a barge load of Barons who saidQ
We thought you'd be here so we've comeY
-
When they told him they'd brought Magna CharterA
The King seemed to go kind of limpZ
But minding his manners he took off his hatQ
And said Thanks very much have a shrimpZ
-
You'd best sign at once said FitzwalterA
If you don't I'll tell thee for a startQ
The next coronation will happen quite soonJ
And you won't be there to take partQ
-
So they spread Charter out on t' tea tableP
And John signed his name like a lambA2
His writing in places was sticky and thickB2
Through dipping his pen in the jamA2
-
And it's through that there Magna CharterA
As were signed by the Barons of oldQ
That in England to day we can do what we likeC2
So long as we do what we're toldQ
