I'll tell you a seafaring storyA
Of a lad who won honour and fameB
Wi' Nelson at Battle 'TrafalgarA
Joe Moggeridge that were his nameB
-
He were one of the crew of the VictoryA
His job when a battle begunC
Was to take cannon balls out o' basketD
And shove 'em down front end o' gunC
-
One day him and Nelson were boxingE
The compass like sailor lads doF
When 'Ardy comes up wi' a spyglassG
And pointing says 'Ere take a screwF
-
They looked to were 'Ardy were pointingE
And saw lots o' ships in a rowA
Joe says abrupt like but respectfulH
'Oratio lad yon's the foeA
-
'What say we attack 'em ' says NelsonC
Says Joe 'Nay lad not today '-
And 'Ardy says 'Aye well let's toss up '-
'Oratio answers 'Okay '-
-
They tossed it were heads for attackingE
And tails for t'other way 'boutI
Joe lent them his two headed pennyA
So the answer was never in doubtI
-
When penny came down 'ead side uppardsG
They was in for a do it were plainJ
And Joe murmered 'Shiver me timbers '-
And Nelson kissed 'Ardy againK
-
And then taking flags out o' lockerA
'E strung out a message on highL
'T were all about England and dutyA
Crew thought they was 'ung out to dryL
-
They got the guns ready for actionC
And that gave 'em trouble enoughM
They 'adn't been fired all the summerA
And touch holes were bunged up wi' fluffM
-
Joe's cannon it weren't 'alf a corkerA
The cannon balls went three foot roundN
They wasn't no toy balloons eitherA
They weighed close on sixty five poundN
-
Joe selecting two of the largestO
Was going to load double for luckP
When a hot shot came in thro' the portholeH
And a gunpowder barrel got struckP
-
By gum there weren't 'alf an explosionC
The gun crew were filled with alarmQ
As out of the porthole went JosephM
Wi' a cannon ball under each armQ
-
At that moment up came the 'Boat swine'C
He says 'Where's Joe ' Gunner repliedR
'E's taken two cannon balls with 'imQ
And gone for a breather outside '-
-
'Do y' think he'll be long ' said the 'Boat swine'C
The gunner replied 'If as 'owS
'E comes back as quick as 'e left usG
'E should be 'ere any time nowC
-
And all this time Joe treading waterA
Was trying 'is 'ardest to floatT
'E shouted thro' turmoil of battleH
'Tell someone to lower a boat '-
-
'E'd come to the top for assistanceG
Then down to the bottom he'd goA
This up and down kind of existenceG
Made everyone laugh except JoeA
-
At last 'e could stand it no longerA
And next time 'e came to the topU
'E said 'If you don't come and save meQ
I'll let these 'ere cannon balls drop '-
-
'T were Nelson at finish who saved himQ
And 'e said Joe deserved the V CQ
But finding 'e 'adn't one 'andyT
'E gave Joe an egg for 'is teaT
-
And after the battle was overA
And vessel was safely in dockV
The sailors all saved up their couponsG
And bought Joe a nice marble clockV
