On young Albert Ramsbottom's birthdayA
His parents asked what he'd like mostB
He said to see t' Tower of LondonC
And gaze upon Anne Boleyn's ghostB
-
They thowt this request were unusualD
And at first to refuse were inclinedE
'Til Pa said a trip t' metrollopseF
Might broaden the little lad's mindE
-
They took charrybank up to LondonC
And got there at quarter to fowerG
Then seeing as pubs wasn't openC
They went straight away to the towerG
-
They didn't think much to the buildin'C
'T weren't what they'd been led to supposeF
And the 'Bad Word' Tower didn't impress themH
They said Blackpool had got one of thoseF
-
At last Albert found a BeefeaterG
And filled the old chap with alarmI
By asking for Ghost of Anne BoleynC
As carried her 'ead 'neath her armI
-
Said Beefeater 'You ought to come FridaysF
If it's ghost of Anne Boleyn you seekJ
Her union now limits her outputK
And she only gets one walk a weekJ
-
'But ' he said 'if it's ghosts that you're afterG
There's Lady Jane Grey's to be seenC
She runs around chased by the 'EadsmanC
At midnight on th' old Tower Green '-
-
They waited on t' green till near midnightL
Then thinking they'd time for a supM
They took out what food they'd brought with themH
And waited for t' ghost to turn upM
-
On the first stroke of twelve up jumped AlbertN
His mouth full of cold dripping toastB
With his stick with the 'orses 'ead 'andleD
He pointed and said 'Here's the ghost '-
-
They felt their skins going all gooseyF
As Lady Jane's Spectre drew nearG
And Albert fair swallered his tonsilsF
When the 'Eadsman an' all did appearG
-
The 'Eadsman chased Jane round the grass patchO
They saw his axe flash in the moonC
And seeing as poor lass were 'eadlessF
They wondered what what next he would pruneC
-
He suddenly caught sight of AlbertN
As midnight was on its last chimeP
As he lifted his axe father murmeredN
'We'll get the insurance this time '-
-
At that Mother rose taking umbridgeQ
She said 'Put that cleaver awayA
You're not cutting our Albert's 'ead offR
Yon collar were clean on todayA
-
The brave little lad stood undauntedN
'Til the ghost were within half a paceF
Then taking the toast he were eatingS
Slapped it dripping side down in his faceF
-
'T were a proper set back for the 'EadsmanC
He let out one 'owl of despairG
Then taking his ladyfriend with himT
He disappeared just like that thereG
-
When Pa saw the way as they vanishedN
He trembled with fear and looked blueD
'Til Ma went and patted his shoulderG
An' said 'Sallright lad we saw it too '-
-
Some say 'twere the drippin' as done itN
From a roast leg of mutton it cameU
And as th' 'Eadsman had been a BeefeaterG
They reckon he vanished from shameU
-
And around Tower Green from that momentN
They've ne're seen a sign of the ghostN
But when t' Beefeaters go on night dutyN
They take slices of cold drippin' toastN
