I CAN DO GOOD AND BADA
-
I found myself unableB
To consume the scallops after reflectionC
Their whole lives were eating and suffocatingD
This is much sadder than tortured peopleB
In extreme pain we leave our bodiesE
And look down to commit the pain to memoryF
Like studious angelsG
The waiter brought me two fortune cookiesE
One future was traumatic enoughH
I decided to open just one cookieF
The one on my right sideI
It said in blue on a thin white stripJ
You must learn to love yourselfK
-
The cookie was much less sweetL
Than my psychiatristM
Earlier he said he was proudN
That as my tumor grew Myself loathing seemed to shrinkO
My teeth made the cookieF
Blades that cut my tongueP
And I spat it outQ
I was with a question for doctor yunusE
But he was on the other coast fast asleepR
I would have askedS
if all of me is the part that s lovingD
What s left to loveT
-
I was suddenly overwhelmedU
With certianity that the second cookieF
Could answer my questionC
I imagined the paper as my body a second body for meF
Baking in a clay oven half beneath it and half over headV
I didn t open the cookie thoughW
I have to grow at some point my imagination cannot always be kicking fateX
As if it were the floor at a stupid partyF
But when you decide someone has something to sayE
Their silence speak to you tooY
The cookie s clear wrapper had a rooster painted on itZ
The lamp s reflection made it a little sun clutched by the talons deep in the clayE
What s left to love is the part of you that s already deadV
-
The dead part of meF
Is busy preparing heaven for the restA2
He envisions it as a dream cemeteryF
No rabbis wild flowers and scrub everywhereB2
Rolling hills with nothing markedC2
Computer chips clipped to the ears of the deadV
So that their loved ones can visit the exact spotD2
He is unskilled with his handsE
But he is moneyed and shouts wellE2
And it s hard to love people committed to projectsE
When I tell him he s abusing the laborF2
He smiles proudly and saysE
God can only do goodG2
I can do good and badA
