You can see the sandhills from our new roomA
ButterfliesB
live in the sandhillsB
and lizardsB
and centipedesB
If you keep very stillC
lizards will think you a stoneD
and run over your lapE
Butterflies' liveriesB
are scarlet and blackF
They drive chariots in airG
People in the chariotsB
are pale as dewH
you can see right through themI
but the chariotsB
are made of gold of the sunJ
They go up to heavenJ
and never catch fireK
There are green centipedesB
and brown centipedesB
and black centipedesB
because green and brown and blackF
are the colors in hell's flagL
CentipedesB
have hundreds of feetM
because it is so far from hellN
to come up for airG
CentipedesB
do not hurryO
They are waiting for the last dayP
when they will creep over the false prophetsB
who will have their hands tiedQ
-
-
-
Night calls to the sandhillsB
and gathers them under herK
she pushes away citiesB
because their sharp lightsB
hurt her soft breastR
Even candles make a sore placeB
when they stick in the nightS
-
There are things in the sandhillsB
that no one knows aboutT
they come out at dark when the young snakes playP
and tell each other secretsB
in the deaf logsB
-
Sometimes before rainU
when the stars have gone insideQ
the night comes close to your windowV
and sniffs at the lightS
But you must not run awayP
you must keep your face to the nightS
and walk backwardW
-
-
-
When it rainsB
and you are pulling off flies' legsB
mama lets you play housesB
with Lizzie and ClaraX
Because you are the Only OneJ
and because Only Ones have to live aloneD
while sisters stay togetherK
Lizzie and ClaraX
give you the dry houseB
and take the one with the leaking roofY
-
Rain like curly hairpinsB
blows on Lizzie and Clara's two headsB
turned like one headZ
two mouthsB
spread into one laughA2
Lizzie is sayingB2
why don't you want to playP
when you feel you'd like to braidC2
the crinkled silver rainU
into a shining ropeD2
to climb up and up and up into the wet skyE2
and never see any one againF2
-
Our gate doesn't hang rightS
It must have pawed at the windG2
and gotten a kickH2
as the wind passed overK
The sitting skyE2
puffs out a gray smokeI2
and the wind makes a red striped soundJ2
blowing out straightK2
but our gate drags its footL2
and whines to itself on one hingeM2
-
-
-
What do you think I've foundJ2
two wee knickers of fairy brassB
or two gold sovereigns folded upN2
in a bit of green silkO2
or two gold bugsB
in little green shirtsB
If you want to knowV
you must walk tip toeV
so your feet just whisper in the grassB
you must carry them carefulP2
and very proudQ2
for their stems bleed drops of milkO2
but Lizzie and Clara shout in gleeO
Pee a bed pee a bedZ
dandelionsB
You look in the eyes of grown up peopleP2
to see if they feelR2
the way you feelR2
but they hide inside of themselvesB
and so you do not find outT
Grown up people sayP
The stars are bright to nightS
but they do not sayP
what you are thinking about starsB
not even mama says what you are thinking about starsB
This makes you feel very lonelyO
-
-
-
It's strange about starsB
You have to be still when they look at youH
They push your song inside of you with their songS2
Their long silvery raysB
sink into you and do not hurtT2
It is good to feel them resting on youH
like great white birdsB
and their shining whitenessB
doesn't burn like the sunJ
it washes all over youH
and makes you feel cleaner'n waterK
-
-
-
My doll Janie has no waistU2
and her body is like a tub with feet on itV2
Sometimes I beat herK
but I always kiss her afterwardsB
When I have kissed all the paint off her bodyO
I shall tie a ribbon about itV2
so she shan't look shabbyO
But it must be blueH
it mustn't be pinkW2
pink shows the dirt on her faceB
that won't wash offX2
-
-
-
I beat JanieO
and beat herK
but still she smiledY2
so I scratched her between the eyes with a pinZ2
Now she doesn't love me anymoreA3
she scowls and scowlsB
though I've begged her to forgive meO
and poured sugar in the hole at the back of her headZ
-
-
-
Mama says Janie is a fairy dollB3
and she has forgiven meO
that she's gone to the marketC3
to buy me some sweetsB
Now she's at the doorA3
and a little bag tied to her neckD3
I run to JanieO
and kiss her all overK
Ah she is still frowningB2
I let the sweets drop on the floorA3
mamaX
has told you a lieE2
-
-
-
ChinamanO
singing in streetM
gleen ledd ish es gleen ledd ish esB
hot sunO
shining on your faceB
it must be a new dayP
But why aren't you happyO
if it's a new dayP
Because something has happenedE3
something sad and terribleP2
Now I remember it's JanieO
YesterdayP
I took Janie outT
and tied my handkerchief over her faceB
and put sand in itV2
and threw her into the ditchF3
down in the black waterK
under the dock leavesB
and when mama asked me where Janie wasB
I said I had lost herK
-
-
-
I'm glad it is night timeG3
so I'll be able to go to sleepH3
and forget all about itV2
But mama looks at my tongueI3
and says she will give me senna teaO
When you smell the teaO
you shut your eyes tightS
and pretend not to hearJ3
the soft cool voice of mamaX
that goes over your foreheadZ
like a little windG2
And then you lie in the darkK3
and stare and stareG
till the faces comeL3
yellow faces with leering eyesB
drifting in a greeny mistM3
I wonderK
if Janie sees facesB
out there alone in the darkK3
I wonderK
if she has got the handkerchief offX2
or if the water has gone in the holeN3
where the whistle wasB
at the back of her headZ
and drowned herK
or if the starsB
can see her under the dock leavesB
-
-
-
It's smoky blue and stillC
over the red roadO3
Wind must be lying down with its tail under itV2
doesn't even flick off the fliesB
And you can hear the silenceB
buzzing in the gum treesB
the way the angels buzzedP3
when they flew through the cedars of LebanonO
with thin gauze wingsB
you could see throughH
Nice to hear the silence buzzingB2
till it comes too closeB
and booms in your earsB
and presses all over youH
till you screamQ3
When you scream at the silenceB
it goes to jingling piecesB
like a silver mirrorK
broken into tiny bitsB
Perhaps its wings are made of glassB
perhaps it lives down in a dark dark caveR3
and only comes upN2
to warm its wings in the sunO
It's cold in the caveR3
no matter how you cover yourself upN2
Little girls sit thereG
dressed in whiteS
and the dolls in their armsB
all have white handkerchiefsB
over their facesB
Their shadows cannot play with themI
their shadows lie down at their feetM
for the little girls sit stiff as stonesB
with their backs to the mouth of the caveR3
where a little light falls offX2
the wings of the silenceB
when it comes down out of the sunO
-
-
-
Moon catches the flying fishS3
as they dive in the bayP
Flying fishS3
spin over and overK
slippity silverK
into the waterK
Mom bends over junglesB
and touches the foreheads of tigersB
as they pass under openings made by dropped leavesB
Tigers stop on the trail of the deerT3
while the moon is on their foreheadsB
they let the stags go byE2
-
Moon is shining strangelyO
on the white palings of the fenceB
Fence keeps very stillC
most times it moves a littleP2
everything moves a littleP2
though you mayn't know itV2
but now the little fenceB
wouldn't change places with the great crossB
that stands so stiff and highE2
with its back to the moonO
Moon shining strangelyO
on the white palings of the fenceB
I am shining tooH
but my light is shut inside of meO
and can't get outT
-
-
-
Old house with black windowsB
blind house begging moonlightS
to put out the shadowsB
why do you want so much lightS
You creak when the wind steps on youH
you cough up dustU3
and your beams acheV3
you know you will soon fallW3
the moon just pities youH
Don't waste yourself moonO
come on my bed and play with meO
Wrap me up in blue lightS
you who are coolX3
I am too hotY3
I am all aliveZ3
and the shadows are outside of meO
-
-
-
There are different kinds of shadowsB
The blind onesB
are the shadows of thingsB
These are the tame shadowsB
they love to play on the wall with youH
and follow you about like cats and dogsB
SometimesB
they hiss at you softlyO
like snakes that do not biteS
or swish like women's dressesB
but if you poke a candle at themI
they pull in their heads and disappearT3
-
But there is a shadowV
that is not the shadow of a thingB2
it is a thing itselfA4
When you meet this shadowV
you must not look at it too longS2
it grows with your looking at itV2
till you are all aloneO
with nothing around youH
nothing nothing nothingB2
but a shadowV
with its eyes full of black lightS
-
-
-
There's a shadow in the corner of the shedZ
crouching lying in waitK2
a black coiled shadowV
watching ready to strikeB4
but I mustn't be afraid of itV2
I mustn't be afraid of anythingB2
Poor evil shadowV
the candle would chase it awayP
only she can't get at itV2
Do you think that every one hates youH
shadow with your back to the wallW3
afraid to lie down and sleepH3
But I don't hate youH
Even the moon means to be kindG2
She just treads on youH
as I'd tread on a worm that I didn't seeO
Don't be afraid of me shadowV
See I've no light in my handC4
nothing to save myself withD4
yet I walk right up to youH
if you'll let meO
I'll put my arms around youH
and stroke you softlyO
Are you surprised I'd put my arms around youH
Is it your black black sorrowV
that nobody loves youH
