Rhyme Scheme: ABACDCAEAFCFGHFIFDJD KLKCICMINJOJFPFIQIIIOne summer day along the street | A |
Men pruned the gums | B |
To make them neat | A |
The tender branches white with flowers | C |
Lay in the sun | D |
For hours and hours | C |
And every hour they grew more sweet | A |
More honey like | E |
Until the street | A |
Smelt like a hive withouten bees | F |
But still the gardeners | C |
Lopped the trees | F |
Then came the children out of school | G |
Noisy and separate | H |
As their rule Of being is The spangled trees | F |
Gave them one heart | I |
Such power to please | F |
Had all the flowering branches strown | D |
Around for them | J |
To make their own | D |
Then such a murmuring arose | K |
As made the ears | L |
Confirm the nose | K |
And give the lie to eyes For hours | C |
Child bees hummed | I |
In the honey flowers | C |
They gathered sprigs and armfuls Some | M |
Ran with their fragrant | I |
Burdens home | N |
And still returned and after them | J |
Would drag great boughs | O |
Some stripped a stem | J |
Of rosy flowers and played with these | F |
Never such love | P |
Had earthly trees | F |
As these young creatures gave By night | I |
The treasured sprays | Q |
Of their delight | I |
Were garnered every one The street | I |
Looked as the council liked it neat | I |
