Do you remember still the little songA
I mumbled on the hill at Aura howB
I told you it was made for Katie's sakeC
When I was fresh from school and loving herD
With all the strength of girlhood And you saidE
You liked my song although I didn't knowF
How it began at first and gabbled thenG
In a half voice because I was too shyH
To speak aloud much less to speak them outI
Words I had joined myself in the full voiceJ
And with the lilt of proper poetryK
You could have hardly heard me Here's the girlL
The little girl from school you never knewM
She made this song Read what you couldn't hearN
How bright the windows areO
When the dear sun shinethP
They strive to reflect the sunQ
To be bright like the sunQ
To give heat like the sunQ
My heart too has its chosen oneQ
And so to shine designethP
The windows on the opposite hill that dayR
Shone bright at sunset too and made me thinkS
Of the old patter I had half forgotT
Do you remember I remind you nowB
Who wandered yesterday for half an hourD
Into St Francis where I thought of youM
And how I would be glad to love you wellU
If I but knew the way The rhyme came backV
Teasing me till I knew I hated itW
I couldn't take that way of loving youM
That was the girl's way Hear the woman nowB
Out of my thinking in the lonely churchX
And the day's labour in a friendly roomY
Tumbled a song this morning you will likeZ
I love my loveA2
But I could not beK
Good for his sakeC
That frightens meK
Nor could I doM
Such things as I shouldB2
Just for the sakeC
Of being goodB2
Deeds are too greatC2
To serve my whimD2
Be ways of lovingE2
Myself or himD2
Whether my deedsF2
Are good or illG2
They're done for their ownH2
Not love's sake stillG2
I didn't know it till the song was doneQ
But that's Ramiro in a nutshell ehI2
With his contempt for individual soulsJ2
And setting of the deed above the manK2
Perhaps I like him better than I thoughtL2
Or would like if he'd give me leave to scornM2
Chameleon adjectival good and illG2
And set the deed so far above the manK2
As to be out of reach of morals tooM
There you and I join issue once againG
