Landscapes Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGAHBIAJKLM NOPQRST UVWX YJZA2B2C2D2KB2A E2HF2The ridges either side of the valley | A |
were covered in dark pine forest | B |
The ploughed hill sides were red | C |
and the pastures were very green | D |
Constable s landscape entitled Weymouth | E |
is always in my mind at such times | F |
my memory of this small part of the | G |
National Gallery surprises even me | A |
and maybe only I know how inevitable it all is | H |
The horsemen are riding through the forest | B |
and at dusk they will halt on its edge | I |
and then after checking their instructions ride carefully | A |
down into the valley delicately picking their way | J |
through the small wood and fording the shallow river | K |
From then on it is not very far | L |
to their destination We both know this | M |
- | |
Somehow the action has at last gone beyond | N |
the painting and this is for real | O |
But there can be no self flattery on this account | P |
it has all been decided for us | Q |
The illusions of freedom are at last | R |
shown to be so obviously ridiculous that | S |
most people cry at this point | T |
- | |
What it left is a canvas and paints | U |
and a little time for distraction before the event | V |
It is not so much a justification but saying | W |
Goodbye now appears irrelevant | X |
- | |
All the lists and secret worlds have now been | Y |
exposed there is little left to say | J |
I did care and the love I claimed | Z |
was and still is the miracle that continues | A2 |
to astonish me I love you | B2 |
It is only that death has forced | C2 |
me into obeying its commands | D2 |
I am powerless and in its power | K |
And that s a personal statement and as true | B2 |
I and honest as I can force the words to be | A |
- | |
The saddles creak and it s almost dusk | E2 |
It doesn t really matter whether this is | H |
the real or a symbol the end s the same | F2 |
