Landscapes Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGAHBIAJKLM NOPQRST UVWX YJZA2B2C2D2KB2A E2HF2

The ridges either side of the valleyA
were covered in dark pine forestB
The ploughed hill sides were redC
and the pastures were very greenD
Constable s landscape entitled WeymouthE
is always in my mind at such timesF
my memory of this small part of theG
National Gallery surprises even meA
and maybe only I know how inevitable it all isH
The horsemen are riding through the forestB
and at dusk they will halt on its edgeI
and then after checking their instructions ride carefullyA
down into the valley delicately picking their wayJ
through the small wood and fording the shallow riverK
From then on it is not very farL
to their destination We both know thisM
-
Somehow the action has at last gone beyondN
the painting and this is for realO
But there can be no self flattery on this accountP
it has all been decided for usQ
The illusions of freedom are at lastR
shown to be so obviously ridiculous thatS
most people cry at this pointT
-
What it left is a canvas and paintsU
and a little time for distraction before the eventV
It is not so much a justification but sayingW
Goodbye now appears irrelevantX
-
All the lists and secret worlds have now beenY
exposed there is little left to sayJ
I did care and the love I claimedZ
was and still is the miracle that continuesA2
to astonish me I love youB2
It is only that death has forcedC2
me into obeying its commandsD2
I am powerless and in its powerK
And that s a personal statement and as trueB2
I and honest as I can force the words to beA
-
The saddles creak and it s almost duskE2
It doesn t really matter whether this isH
the real or a symbol the end s the sameF2
