for MarianA
-
Looking at the zoo the great white parkB
of a misty winter s afternoon You re greatC
and I love you for itD
All the animals have their thick winter coats onE
the childish humour of this is so enjoyableF
A brass clock strikes the hour of three andG
sets in motion mechanical chimes that areH
beaten out by rampant bears and prancing monkeysI
with heavy metal limbs jerking to the rhythmJ
this obviously moves the crowd of children who reK
watching some laugh with joy others gasp with wonderL
-
Let s call this charming story A day at the zooM
all essays to be handed in by the end of the weekN
-
But back to the winter and coatsO
It s very crisp today and the air is clearP
The buffaloes are magnificent and beautiful they are a rich brown and the hair is not matted as it was in summer alasQ
A pair of bobcats lie with their front paws round each other s necks like lovers they lick each other s fur in turn it is a golden yellowR
A pair of badgersS
A pair of lynxT
Two pairs of raccoonsU
and the grizzlies and polar bears lie sleeping in the sunA
-
Let s call this The Peaceable Kingdom A Painterly ReferenceV
or Winter in the Zoo or A Day at the ZooM
In fact let s forget what we ll call thisW
Instead let s returning toM
the zoo in the corner of the parkB
the white mist hanging over the treesI
The fact we can become children againX
shows how right we were inY
believing in our love despite the canyonA
which we entered stumbling along the dark bedZ
of the Bad Water riverL
But we climbed out the other sideA2
though taken by surprise on topping the rimB2
never having realised the end was so very nearP
But there it was the herd of buffaloR
grazing on the lush plainsC2
Geography in our sense is excitingD2
Plotting the whole course nowE2
Sunlight and the shadows of fastF2
moving clouds sliding across the grasslandG2
I imagine North Texas or even Dakota MontanaH2
-
The end only of this canyon but a continuationA
of something greater compare it to a plateauR
of great size and richness laced with gentleF
deaths at its edges the spirits of the tribeI2
waiting with a deep love for usJ2
It s not so much of a descent either but theseI
details can wait you seeK2
-
You re great and very wise we laugh asL2
we reach the top of the rock outcropM2
and I love you for itD
-
We flower we continue from where we left off beforeN2
though the statement of this can only beK2
something secondary for us and therefore decorativeO2
There s no worryK2
People of the World relaxP2
We walk among the animalsQ2
the cages upset youM
When I really think I know you re always rightR2
there s no worry we re on the same planetS2
and so very luckyK2
that the poem should end like thisW
is very goodT2
