At night when Passion's ebbing tideA
Left bare the Sands of TruthB
Yasmini resting by my sideA
Spoke softly of her youthB
-
And one she said was tall and slimC
Two crimson rose leaves made his mouthD
And I was fain to follow himC
Down to his village in the SouthD
-
He was to build a hut hard byE
The stream where palms were growingF
We were to live and love and lieE
And watch the water flowingF
-
Ah dear delusive distant shoreG
By dreams of futile fancy giltH
The riverside we never sawI
The palm leaf hut was never builtH
-
One had a Tope of Mangoe treesJ
Where early morning noon and lateK
The Persian wheels with patient easeJ
Brought up their liquid silver freightK
-
And he was fain to rise and reachL
That garden sloping to the seaM
Whose groves along the wave swept beachL
Should shelter him and love and meM
-
Doubtless upon that western shoreG
With ripe fruit falling to the groundN
There dwells the Peace he hungered forG
The lovely Peace we never foundN
-
Then there came one with eager eyesO
And keen sword ready for the frayP
He missed the storms of Northern skiesO
The reckless raid and skirmish gayP
-
He rose from dreams of war's alarmsQ
To make his daggers keen and brightR
Desiring in my very armsQ
The fiercer rapture of the fightR
-
He left me soon too soon and soughtS
The stronger earlier love againT
News reached me from the Cabul CourtU
Afterwards nothing doubtless slainV
-
Doubtless his brilliant haggard eyesO
Long since took leave of life and lightR
And those lithe limbs I used to prizeO
Feasted the jackal and the kiteR
-
But the most loved his sixteen yearsW
Shone in his cheeks' transparent redX
My kisses were his first my tearsY
Fell on his face when he was deadX
-
He died he died I speak the truthB
Though light love leave his memory dimC
He was the Lover of my YouthB
And all my youth went down with himC
-
For passion ebbs and passion flowsZ
But under every new caressA2
The riven heart more keenly knowsZ
Its own inviolate faithfulnessZ
-
Our Gods are kind and still deem fitB2
As in old days with those to lieE
Whose silent hearths are yet unlitB2
By the soft light of infancyZ
-
Therefore one strange mysterious nightB2
Alone within the Temple shadeB2
Recipient of a God's delightB2
I lay enraptured unafraidB2
-
Also to me the boon was givenC2
But mourning quickly followed mirthD2
My son whose father stooped from HeavenC2
Died in the moment of his birthD2
-
When from the war beyond the seasZ
The reckless Lancers home returnedB2
Their spoils were laid across my kneesZ
About my lips their kisses burnedB2
-
Back from the Comradeship of DeathE2
Free from the Friendship of the SwordB2
With brilliant eyes and famished breathE2
They came to me for their rewardB2
-
Why do I tell you all these thingsZ
Baring my life to you unsoughtB2
When Passion folds his wearied wingsZ
Sleep should be follower never ThoughtB2
-
Ay let us sleep The window paneV
Grows pale against the purple skyE
The dawn is with us once againT
The dawn which always means good byeE
-
Within her little trellised room beside the palm fringed seaZ
She wakeful in the scented gloom spoke of her youth to meZ
