| Utterly unreserved to Love's control | A |
| But Love deceived me wrenched my youth away | B |
| And made the gold of life for ever grey | B |
| Long I lived lonely yet I tried in vain | C |
| With any other Joy to stifle pain | C |
| There is no other joy I learned to know | D |
| And so returned to Love as long ago | D |
| Yet I this little while ere I go hence | E |
| Love very lightly now in self defence | E |
