The listless Palm trees catch the breeze aboveA
The pile built huts that edge the salt LagoonB
There is no Breeze to cool the heat of loveA
No wind from land or sea at night or noonB
-
Perfumed and robed I wait my Lord for youC
And my heart waits alert with strained delightD
My flowers are loath to close as though they knewC
That you will come to me before the nightD
-
In the Verandah all the lights are litE
And softly veiled in rose to please your eyesF
Between the pillars flying foxes flitE
Their wings transparent on the lilac skiesF
-
Come soon my Lord come soon I almost fearG
My heart may fail me in this keen suspenseH
Break with delight at last to know you nearG
Pleasure is one with Pain if too intenseH
-
I envy these the steps that you will treadI
The jasmin that will touch you by its leavesJ
When in your slender height you stoop your headI
At the low door beneath the palm thatched eavesJ
-
For though you utterly belong to meK
And love has done his utmost 'twixt us twainL
Your slightest careless touch yet seems to beK
That keen delight so much akin to painL
-
The night breeze blows across the still LagoonB
And stirs the Palm trees till they wave aboveA
Our pile built huts Oh come my Lord come soonB
There is no Breeze to cool the heat of loveA
-
Every time you give yourself to meK
The gift seems greater and yourself more fairM
This slight built palm thatched hut has come to beK
A temple since my Lord you visit thereM
-
And as the water gurgling softly goesN
Among the piles beneath the slender floorO
I hear it murmur as it seaward flowsN
Of the great Wonder seen upon the shoreO
-
The Miracle that you should come to meK
Whom the whole world seeing can but desireP
It is as though some White Star stooped to beK
The messmate of our little cooking fireP
-
Leaving the Glory of his Purple SkiesF
And the White Friendship of the Crescent MoonB
And yet I look into your brilliant eyesF
And find content Oh come my Lord come soonB
-
Perfumed and robed I wait for you I waitQ
The flowers that please you wreathed about my hairM
And this poor face set forth in jewelled stateQ
So more than proud since you have found it fairM
-
My lute is ready and the fragrant drinkR
Your lips may honour how it will rejoiceS
Losing its life in yours the lute I thinkR
But wastes the time when I might hear your voiceS
-
But you desired it therefore I obeyT
Your slightest as your utmost wish or willU
Whether it please you to caress or slayT
It would please me to give obedience stillU
-
I would delight to die beneath your kissV
I envy that young maiden who was slainL
So her warm blood flowing beneath the kissV
Might ease the wounded Sultan of his painL
-
If she loved him as I love you my LordW
There is no pleasure on the earth so sweetX
As is the pain endured for one adoredW
If I lay crushed beneath your slender feetX
-
I should be happy Ah come soon come soonB
See how the stars grow large and white aboveA
The land breeze blows across the salt LagoonB
There is no Breeze to cool the heat of loveA
