Whether I loved you who shall sayA
Whether I drifted down your wayA
In the endless River of Chance and ChangeB
And you woke the strangeB
Unknown longings that have no namesC
But burn us all in their hidden flamesC
Who shall sayA
-
Life is a strange and a wayward thingD
We heard the bells of the Temples ringD
The married children in passing singD
The month of marriage the month of springD
Was full of the breath of sunburnt flowersE
That bloom in a fiercer light than oursE
And under a sky more fiercely blueF
I came to youF
-
You told me tales of your vivid lifeG
Where death was cruel and danger rifeG
Of deep dark forests of poisoned treesH
Of pains and passions that scorch and freezeH
Of southern noontides and eastern nightsI
Where love grew frantic with strange delightsI
While men were slaying and maidens dancedJ
Till I who listened lay still entrancedJ
Then swift as a swallow heading southK
I kissed your mouthK
-
One night when the plains were bathed in bloodL
From sunset light in a crimson floodL
We wandered under the young teak treesH
Whose branches whined in the light night breezeH
You led me down to the water's brinkM
The Spring where the Panthers come to drinkM
At night there is always water hereN
Be the season never so parched and sereO
Have we souls of beasts in the forms of menP
I fain would have tasted your life blood thenP
-
The night fell swiftly this sudden landQ
Can never lend us a twilight strandQ
'Twixt the daylight shore and the ocean nightR
But takes as it gives at once the lightR
We laid us down on the steep hillsideS
While far below us wild peacocks criedS
And we sometimes heard in the sunburnt grassT
The stealthy steps of the Jungle passT
We listened knew not whether they wentU
On love or hunger the more intentU
And under your kisses I hardly knewF
Whether I loved or hated youF
-
But your words were flame and your kisses fireV
And who shall resist a strong desireV
Not I whose life is a broken boatW
On a sea of passions adrift afloatW
And whether I came in love or hateX
That I came to you was written by FateX
In every hue of the blood red skyY
In every tone of the peacocks' cryY
-
While every gust of the Jungle nightR
Was fanning the flame you had set alightR
For these things have power to stir the bloodL
And compel us all to their own chance moodZ
And to love or not we are no more freeA2
Than a ripple to rise and leave the seaA2
-
We are ever and always slaves of theseH
Of the suns that scorch and the winds that freezeH
Of the faint sweet scents of the sultry airB2
Of the half heard howl from the far off lairB2
These chance things master us ever CompelC2
To the heights of Heaven the depths of HellC2
-
Whether I love you You do not askD2
Nor waste yourself on the thankless taskD2
I give your kisses at least returnE2
What matter whether they freeze or burnE2
I feel the strength of your fervent armsF2
What matter whether it heals or harmsF2
-
You are wise you take what the Gods have sentU
You ask no question but rest contentU
So I am with you to take your kissG2
And perhaps I value you more for thisG2
For this is Wisdom to love to liveH2
To take what Fate or the Gods may giveI2
To ask no question to make no prayerB2
To kiss the lips and caress the hairB2
Speed passion's ebb as you greet its flowJ2
To have to hold and in time let goJ2
-
And this is our Wisdom we rest togetherV
On the great lone hills in the storm filled weatherV
And watch the skies as they pale and burnE2
The golden stars in their orbits turnE2
While Love is with us and Time and PeaceK2
And life has nothing to give but theseH
But whether you love me who shall sayA
Or whether you drifting down my wayA
In the great sad River of Chance and ChangeB
With your looks so weary and words so strangeB
Lit my soul from some hidden flameL2
To a passionate longing without a nameL2
Who shall sayA
Not I who am but a broken boatW
Content for a while to drift afloatW
In the little noontide of love's delightsI
Between two NightsI
