The Rao Of Ilore Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBAB ADEDFGHGAG IJKJALBLAL MNONPNNN

I was sold to the Rao of IloreA
Slender and tall was heB
When his litter carried him down the streetC
I peeped through the thatch to seeB
Ah the eyes of the Rao of IloreA
My lover that was to beB
-
The hair that lay on his youthful browA
Was curled like an ocean waveD
His eyes were lit with a tender smileE
But his lips were soft and graveD
For sake of these things I was still with joyF
When the silver coins were paidG
And they took me up to the Palace gatesH
Delighted and unafraidG
Ah the eyes of the Rao of IloreA
May never their brilliance fadeG
-
So near was I to the crown of lifeI
Ten thousand times alasJ
The Diwan leant from the latticed hallK
Looked down and saw me passJ
He begged for me from the Rao of IloreA
Who answered She is thineL
Thou wert ever more than a father to meB
And thy desires are mineL
Ah the eyes of the Rao of IloreA
That never had looked in mineL
-
My years were spent in the Diwan's CourtsM
My youth died down that dayN
For sake of thine own content of mindO
My lost beloved I prayN
That never my Lord a love may knowP
Like that he threw awayN
Ah the eyes of the Rao of IloreN
Who threw my life awayN
