Oh Masters you who rule the worldA
Will you not wait with me awhileB
When swords are sheathed and sails are furledA
And all the fields with harvest smileB
I would not waste your time for longC
I ask you but when you are tiredA
To read how by the weak the strongC
Are weighed and worshipped and desiredA
-
When weary of the Mart the LoomD
The Withering house the Riffle blocksE
The Barrack square the Engine roomD
The pick axe ringing on the rocksE
When tents are pitched and work is doneF
While restful twilight broods aboveG
By fresh lit lamp or dying sunF
See in my songs how women loveG
-
We shared your lonely watch by nightA
We knew you faithful at the helmH
Our thoughts went with you through the fightA
That saved a soul or wrecked a realmH
Ah how our hearts leapt forth to youI
In pride and joy when you prevailedA
And when you died serene and trueI
We wept in silence when you failedA
-
Oh brain that did not gain the goldA
Oh arm that could not wield the swordA
Here is the love that is not soldA
Here are the hearts to hail you LordA
-
You played and lost the game What thenJ
The rules are harsh and hard we knowK
You still Oh brothers are the menJ
Whom we in secret reverence soK
Your work was waste Maybe your shareL
Lay in the hour you laughed and kissedA
Who knows but what your son shall wearL
The laurels that his father missedA
-
Ay you who win and you who loseM
Whether you triumph or despairL
When your returning footsteps chooseM
The homeward track our love is thereL
For since the world is ordered thusN
To you the fame the stress the swordA
We can but wait until to usN
You give yourselves for our rewardA
-
To Whaler's deck and Coral beachO
To lonely Ranch and Frontier FortA
Beyond the narrow bounds of speechO
I lay the cable of my thoughtA
I fain would send my thanks to youI
Though who am I to give you praiseP
Since what you are and work you doI
Are lessons for our easier waysP
-
'Neath alien stars your camp fires glowK
I know you not your tents are farQ
My hope is but in song to showK
How honoured and dear you areQ
