Ah my lord are the tidings trueA
That thy mother's jewels are shapen anewA
-
I hear that a bride has chosen beenB
The stars consulted the parents seenC
-
Had I been childless had never there smiledD
The brilliant eyes from the face of a childD
-
Then at least I had understoodE
This thing they tell me thou findest goodE
-
But I have been down to the River of DeathF
With painful footsteps and shuddering breathF
-
Seven times thou hast daughters threeG
And four young sons who are fair as theeG
-
I am not unlovely over my headH
Not twenty summers as yet have spedH
-
'T is eleven years since my opening lifeI
Was given to thee by my father's wifeI
-
Ah those days They were lovely to meG
When little and shy I waited for theeG
-
Till I locked my arms round my lover aboveJ
A child in form but a woman in loveJ
-
And I bore thy sons as a woman shouldE
Year by year as is meet and goodE
-
Thy mother was ever content with meG
And Oh Beloved I worshipped theeG
-
And now it's over alas my lordK
Better I felt thy sharpest swordK
-
I hear she is youthful and fair as IL
When I came to thee in the days gone byL
-
Her breasts are firmer this bosom slipsM
Somewhat weighted by children's lipsM
-
But they were thy children Oh lord my kingN
Ah why hast thy heart devised this thingN
-
I am not as the women of this thy landO
Meek and timid broken to handO
-
From the distant North I was given to theeG
Whose daughters are passionate fierce and freeG
-
I could not dwell by a rival's sideP
I seek a bridegroom as thou a brideP
-
The night she yieldeth her youth to theeG
Death shall take his pleasure in meG
